Any taxonomic work on red longan? This can’t be part of dimocarpus longan. Subspecies at the least?
Either way, I like it!

It will definitely great if it could have its own taxonomy, I never found some in any books or on internet.
there is a lack of information on Ruby Longan.
You will perhaps be able to answer a question that many asked on this forum. Does Ruby Longan seed produce Ruby Longan Tree? My contacts in South East Asia always said 'NO'
Mine is a grafted tree, I hope to have fruit Next year, I will be able to contribute too.

To verify, this is not the red ruby that everyone goes bonkers over online. It's probably a older/original variety/species of it. It has red coloration, but nothign like the full red you see in the ruby red.

Hi gang, Here's a photo of a red longan I'm growing from seed. Perhaps not the ruby red as well, although maybe a bit early to tell. The seedling is about 14 months old.
Reaf's, how is your grafted tree growing? Any photos you can share?

I killed it when I repotted it. I did it too early, I should have waited more... I have two others grafted on their way to me
-
RIP Red Longan. Sorry to hear it Reafs. I can relate to losing plants now and again. Glad you found two more grafted trees. I'm interested in more Red Longan too. Can you point me to where I may find grafted trees? Thank you.
-
is that the one that frankie has? i remember him having a special variety but i think it has a special name and wasnt just a red longan?. the flavor was even better than a regular longan. he had a younger tree planted near his shade tent that i tried from
-
I’m not familiar with Frankie or that particular tree. But I’d love to see a photo or two.
-
Do the original ruby longan have red fruit.
-
I'm not sure. I'll post photos once my unknown varietal of 'Red Longan' eventually fruits. Fingers crossed!
-
Anyone have updates on their Ruby Longan plants?
-
I had one ordered from overseas. The USDA showed up at my house to confiscate it!
-
You know, there is only the present time. So, if you were looking into moving to another country, why not start the process now? Perhaps you'll find a place more in alignment with your preference in the South Americas and life will go on as it needs to, just in a way that you enjoy more. There is no usda in Costa Rica.
-
Huh? Leave the USA because they came for my red longan? No thanks!
-
Just an idea of what is possible.
-
Ive never been to costa rica but my understanding is they are another covid authoratarian nanny state making people take experimental drugs and wear face diapers. Not exactly a beacon of freedom and liberty. Just saying.
-
Again, just an option. Things can be better than we can imagine if we allow our selves to be open to all the possibilities that we don't know.
-
Thats true and I understand your comment and appreciate the point you are making honestly. Not sure costa rica is the answer but your point is well taken. Its always smart to keep an open mind and consider all your options.
The US federal .gov says we shouldnt go to costa rica. Go figure...

I also bought a grafted red longan and got it to fruit...they were normal size, red and tasted like a normal longan, nothing special.
I don't know if there's a really better red variety around, maybe it's just a hype. In Indonesia they paid high prices for those red tree's..
-
You can buy them for like 10 dollars a grafted tree in vietnam. tons of sellers. Never seen them in person but have seen the trees for sale. Lots of shippers back and forth from the states. Might try and ask an importer for some. they might be able to get it by customs
