I have 4 mangosteens growing in containers,  none have fruited yet that will be at least 2-3 years if I am lucky for some reason the one in the smallest container, is the one that seems to be growing the most lately, it flushed new leaves, 3 times since December.
Did you grow them from seed or are they grafted?
Iv grow alot of different perennial plants from seed and have multiple plants, Almost always the smaller potted plant does better and it fairly obvious since.I give the most vigorous specimen the biggest pot and it is soon outdone by one in a smaller pot.
Is there some of rule for perfect pot size or is the medium more important?
I have some very young mangosteen  seedlings that are just pushing leaves out of the extremely phallic looking shoot and I wasn't able to find info on the forum as to initial pot size and when it would need to be transplanted

Nice pics your garden is looking very healthy and happy:) those waterboxes are very interesting I haven't seen them before and will check out the site for details. I also haven't heard of cotton meal, is fish bone meal superior to normal bone meal?
How do you find the oak leaves for mulch I will have an overabundance of oak leaves very soon so can choose oak eucalyptus pine needles or random autumn assortment.
Looking forward to your other pics.

I have some spraguei received from fruitlovers have been using the bag method for 3 months the seeds swelled slightly but haven't germinated but are all still firm and definitely not rotted. Would it be better to wait, plant all the seeds in one pot or apply GA3?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Gritty mix for seedlings

Don't know about gritty mix but I have had great success with cocopeat especially for young seedlings and germinating. It seems to be impervious to mold, is dirt cheap and my roots are much more developed in it than in normal soil.

Welcome georgesunny glad to have you on the forum iv also just started here and am learning so much from experts such as Yourself:)
You speak.of using moringa as a soil amendment I have read about using moringa as a Foliar spray for nutrients and as a growth regulator similar to kelp?
Have you any experience with this?

Seems they should be fine if directly sown in the sun but if started in the shade give them time to adapt to full sun.

Thanks Greenthumb I'm getting seeds again soon I will sow in full sun this time.

I agree Durianlover growing seedlings with plans to graft later seems like a good way to go.
You may even get a great tasting seedling.
Perhaps growing up in a certain environment from seed more prepares a tree or future rootstock to thrive there. I think that's a theory called epigenetics or environment effecting gene expression but then I'm far from knowledgeable on the subject so I could be wrong. It just seems logical:)

I had month old seedlings fry in the sun but temps were around 32c and my altitude makes the sun very intense! I stupidly moved them from under shade cloth though so I'm not sure if they may be acclimatised to the sun if they germinated in it as long as they don't dry out.
Anyone  germinate seeds in full sun?

Seeds are expensive as is I can only imagine what shipping plants internationally must cost!
Its like when you see SQ on a restaurant  menu I wont bother asking cause its probably out of my price range.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Uvaria grandiflora

This is a rare annona relative from Thailand and it's edible. Not sure how good it is but would love to grow this in my yard. Anybody have this out there?

Sorry to revive such an old thread but did you ever end up growing U.grandifolia? It looks like both the fruit and flower are quite beautiful!
This blog talks about growing it in Tailand:

They say this flower is as large as your palm and the fruit is sweet.

Yes not much info at all! The seed source  is silverhillseeds.co.za they are always very good.

Artabotrys brachypetalus
"Purple hook-berry", climber/shrub/spreading tree, rough grey bark, leathery leaves, interesting yellowish fl on twisted zigzag stalks, edible fruit. Sow Sp. Zone 10.

Artabotrys monteiroae
"Red Hook Berry", scrambling shrub/liane, climbs using curling fl stalks, ovate leathery lvs, yellowish 2cm fl Sp, purplish black fig-like fruits. Sow Sp. Zone 9

these are the only images I could find and information was scant to none. I also saw there are some other interesting edible Uvaria species. Does anyone know anything about these plants?

1145
I recently ordered some seeds locally and stumbled across some interesting indigenous fruits in the family Annonacea so I ordered them but info online is very scarce.

Uvaria lucida( Evergr climber/shrub, elliptic grey lvs with prominent veins, heads of fleshy green fl, hairy orange brown fruits. Sow Sp. Zone 10.

Ok here is a pic of the seeds and a letter that the.seller gave with them. if anything the so called "dwarf" seeds are bigger. I am happy to have the seeds even if it is a Mangoscheme they were cheaper than ordering mangosteen seeds anywhere else I could find.

I received the "dwarf" and normal mangosteen seeds in the post today after about a month in transit. Both lots had at least four seeds sprouting so I have put them in pots barely covered(is this the correct method?)labeled them separately and put them in my germination cupboard. Now will wait to see any differences in growth.

I tried to post pics of the sprouting seeds and a letter about the "dwarf" from the seller but whenever I try to the linked site won't accept my pics iv tried big and small file sizes with no luck. If someone wouldn't mind walking me through how to post pics or where I can find how to post? I have already looked in the FAQ thanks in advance. Don't know if the problem.could be because I'm trying to post images from a smart phone?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Strychnos sp. seeds wanted
« on: April 03, 2014, 04:37:49 PM »
Iv tried spinosa in kruger game reserve in S.A and it was nice but lots of seeds. The one I tried was just wild in the bushveld  and not cultivated though and seeds are said to be very variable.
I haven't tried S.pungens or any other strychnos sp. so I can't comment on what is best.
I'm happy to give people the one I think is Spinosa just for cost of postage. The S.pungens I'm buying for myself from a vendor so I can just order more if anyone wants I just ask you pay postage and cost price it's like 4/5$ for a pkt which I think is around ten. I'm also getting Marula seeds at the same time if anyone wants.
