I assume this is the same type called Meiwa in US?  Fortunella crassifolia?

Yeah, I have tiny trees on FD from recent graphs producing significant crops already.  They will produce fast

maprang?  I'm interested in these also.  I've ordered a few seedlings over the years and they always die very soon after.  I'm thinking a soil or nutrient issue, want to try many different soils until something works

40 years and only 2in diameter?  That is amazing.

I have a bunch of grafted fukushu and I don't recall any thorns

« on: January 13, 2023, 12:56:10 PM »
All of the jackfruit and its artocarpus relatives I have growing in containers did poorly, even outdoors and in greenhouse in winter.  Might just be the container soil mix for me, though.

832
Are yours normally indoors when they bloom?  Are you getting seedless fruit?

I noticed that the one in my greenhouse would often make entire crops of totally seedless fruit, while the ones that spent time outdoors were very seedy.

Very nice!

These turned out to be too vigorous for me in ground, I have been re-grafting onto Flying Dragon for my greenhouse.  You might have better luck in containers, indoors, without them getting out of hand

Owari is very similar to Kishu, it was one of my favorite mandarins but mine died for some unknown reason.  I haven't bothered to replace it because the Kishus are close enough

These are full sun plants so you want to make sure no parts are significantly shaded by other nearby plants.  The exact dimensions aren't really important.  With my many, many container trees I end up arranging them all so that the full-sun-only plants are shading the part-shade plants, but not each other.  It is like a puzzle every spring to find the best fit.

Yeah I check fruitlovers.com seed list regularly but there is a ton of stuff listed there that is never actually in stock even if you watch all year.  Oh well, I'll report back if I see 'em for sale

I'm interested in this also, ever since I saw this thread:  https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=5353.0

In my greenhouse I am basically doing an artocarpus trial now, and so far everything is doing really well.  They did poorly in containers for me but once I moved them into the greenhouse dirt they started taking off.

It looks like polynesian produce stand doesn't have them now.  I guess I will try to remember to check back in a couple months

EDIT - I just noticed PPS's prices are insane.  Nearly $200 shipped for a kwai muk seedling?  Under the Similar Items on same page... kwai muk seedling for less than twenty bucks shipped from 9waters.

They are great, I have bought one of almost everything they sell over the years.  Prices used to be significantly cheaper a couple years ago. Now they are not price competitive but quality is still excellent

My experience here in US is that lemon trees for sale are commonly rooted cuttings.  These would not be dwarfing.

I finally bought a Lisbon lemon (for its trifoliate orange compatibility) and grafted it into Flying Dragon so I can keep it in a container forever.

Citrus General Discussion / kishu is very much worthwhile
« on: January 06, 2023, 11:24:41 PM »
I understand that Kishu mandarins have a reputation for being tasty but too small for commercial cultivation.  I don't quite understand this, as they aren't really smaller than most of the mandarins sold as clementines/cuties/halos/whatever.   They are consistently seedless, excellent tasting, and very easy to peel.

This are definitely one of my favorite varieties of the citrus I've grown, and they are quite productive even in a container.

They are ripe when green-yellow for me, and are approaching overripeness by the time they are fully orange

Here's the ones I just picked, with a typical persian lime for size comparison

Mine are wet all the time and do fine.  They seem to hate the sun, though.  My personal experience is the opposite of Finca La Isla's... mine cook easily in direct sunlight and look great when in mostly shade.  I gave a seedling to a relative and they have it growing in a half-sunny window of their house and it looked better than the ones I had growing in full sun.  I moved all mine to mostly shade and they look much healthier now

Mine has been problem-free and is a great producer.  Mine are sweet, but not super sweet as others said.  Mine are HUGE though, the size of large grapefruit/small pummelo.  My only complaint about these is that the flesh near the bump on the top of the fruit is sometimes dry, I saw similar effect with Valentine pummelo.

Merry Christmas!

I am looking forward to all the half-orange mandarins that will ripe in the next couple weeks.  I keep hoping I can give some out on Christmas but they always seem to need a bit more time

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Do Satsumas get better with age?
« on: December 04, 2022, 09:01:53 PM »
I had a small owari that was never all that healthy, it would grow some, fruit some, and die back some.  Eventually it died completely.  However, the fruit was always very good!  I wonder if it is the growing conditions rather than the age of the tree that is the issue for you.  Or could be just bad luck :)

I have a bunch of excess lemon drop garcinias in half-gallon to 1gallon containers if anyone is looking for this size.

Kumquats and mandarins are both relatively compact growers compared to pummelos, oranges, lemons, grapefruit.  You should be fine.

this is the best USDA-hardiness map I have found of europe that includes Greece:

In containers you will likely be okay without dwarfing rootstock.  When I transplanted some container oranges and grapefruit into the ground they got huge quickly, though

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Rangpur Lime Tasting

I rag on rangpur a lot, but only because the competition is better, we are spoiled with amazing citrus varieties.  I agree it would make a fine juice if sweetened up.
