Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Avocado trees flooded with salt water.

ground is sooo sandy here it dries out quickly. Sorry to hear you lost some. Salt has killed half of all the landscaping here. Was hoping the trees could take it, but it is not looking good.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado trees flooded with salt water.
« on: October 24, 2022, 01:18:24 PM »
Hurricane Ian flooded our property, ON Nish and Brogdon avocados got 2 feet of salt water on them. I'm in South FL in very sandy soil. Have top soil and mulch on top 6 inches. Trees have been doing well for years. Previous hurricanes burnt all the leaves badly but trees came back strong. Now most all the leaves are fully brown with little to no green on them. Water the plants hard every 3 days trying to flush the salt out. Anything else I can do? guess if they will survive?

I have had my ON for 5 years never, able to get it to hold fruit. Cleared a near by tree to give it more sun, mulched all around it. It responded well and produced much more fruit. But it has dropped most again. Tree looks happy tons of new growth, but won't hold fruit. Hope yours does better, keep us posted on your progress.

I know this is an older thread but thought I would post an update here. Just picked my last avocados off the Nish. Got the first in late oct. a little early but still good. Have been picking all the way to mid Feb. Never had them on so long. Tree is starting to bloom now so I thought I should remove the remaining fruit. Can avocados still have fruit and flower successfully ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What bugs are these on my avocado leafs?
« on: January 19, 2021, 06:37:52 PM »
Got the very little white bugs on bottom of leaves. They are turning the top of the leaves black. Some of the websites say White fly and some say Mites. Any idea what they are and how to get rid of them?

Just found this thread . I have 2 Nishikawa's here in Naples . They couldn't be any different from each other . I grows slow and produces a few fruit  . The other Is growing much faster and produces a lot of fruit . The one thing they have in common is the main trunk splits and they have 2 trunks now . These trees like to spread . I really like the taste and am looking forward to November . I will probably remove one of them and replace with something that ripens at a different time . Anyone close to the Naples area that has some different varieties and wants to swap some let me know .  Mike

Never heard of a Ettinger . Don't think they are very popular in south Florida . Any reason why you recommend them over the more popular Day's or Simmonds  options ? We are the same environment as Carlos in Miami .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where to get Avocado scions

i'm actually getting excited about trying . Thanks for the encouragement .

15
worth a try . Watched some videos and think i can do this . Now the question is where can i buy the scions to do it ?  looking for day , simmons and catalina

the tall one is the Nish . About 9ft tall . The short one is the Brogdon . It broke off in the hurricane but is growing back fast . About 4ft tall .

Here's the story . About 4 years ago had my gardener pick me up a cado tree . When asked what type it was he didn't remember . Started reading on here about varieties and landed up purchasing a Nisikawa , Oro negro , and a Brogdon . years latter here is where i'm at . Don't like the Brogdon , seed too big , hard to peel a real PITA . So out it comes . The unknown tree lands up being another Nishikawa , What are the chances . Since i only have room for 4 i don't want to Nish's so out one comes . That leaves me with one Nish and an ON (which finally started bearing fruit this year ) Unfortunately they both bear fruit around the same time (holidays) .

So what i'm looking for is 2 trees that bear differently from what I have . After hours of reading i'm settling in on a Day and the other either Catalina , Simmons or Holiday . Would like any input . Located in SW fl. Naples area .

Also anyone in the Naples area that wants a Brogdon or Nish can have them if they want to dig them out .

Decided to wait a little longer to pick them this time . Was thinking 1 of 3 pick 12/15 and then space the rest out about 2 weeks . Mother nature had a different plan , checked the tree today and 2 had fallen . The first was smaller 14oz and had a bad bruise on the outside , it was also soft . The next one was bigger 18oz and was still hard . So i cut the small ripe one open hoping it was ok and this is what i got ! You know when you have to wait a full year to have these and you only get 3 ... i'm excited . Added some salt and a little hot sauce , Yahoo. I love the taste of these things . What a lunch .Dont know when if fell so dont know how long it took to ripen .

Both on my Nish's started growing wild after the hurricane , they really have matured in the last 9 months, so i'm hoping to get a lot more fruits next time . Last year had a lot of pee's but most fell off (fertilized more this year ). Also either animals were getting some or gardeners were taking a few, so this year i tied mesh bags around them and all survived . Thanks everyone for your help .

Berto ,

Saw that you are in SW FL . I'm In Naples . I got 3 Nish's on one tree only . none on the other . When do you pick yours ? i previously did end on Nov. mine were smaller than the 23oz others report . Some people say they pick in Jan. or later . Since we live in the same area wondering when you pick.

I know this is an old post but i wanted to add that i got 2 of these a few years ago and really love them . They do start slow but when they take hold they spread way out , look funny . But the avocados are great , not like anything else i have ever had . Now if i can get my Oro Negro to produce something after 5 years that would be great . Thanks to all of you guys for the good info
