Citrus General Discussion / Xie Shan Ripe Yet?
« on: October 15, 2022, 04:19:40 PM »
My very small Xie Shan tree has two really good size fruits. So large in fact they will bend the tree over if not staked.
My question is, are they ripe? I don't want to pick them too early.

Thanks
Greg

Cold Hardy Citrus / Arctic Frost Report
« on: October 12, 2021, 07:30:29 PM »
Greetings.
As I have mentioned before, I have two Arctic Frost trees that are around five years old. They have up until this point been a disappointment. The first orange was terrible, with a flavor that would cut your throat. Last summer I decided to make a last-ditch effort with them and planted them in the ground. They survived the cold snap of 17 Degrees last winter. I built a makeshift shelter consisting of ladders and tarps with a space heater for four nights/days.
This summer they have held their own, but nothing to brag about. At this point, I believe that my care of the trees is substantially responsible for their mediocre performance. I failed to appreciate the high nitrogen requirements of a tree planted in the ground. I'm convinced that had I fertilized correctly, they would have had a good year.

Currently, one tree has quite a bit of fruit, and the other just a few.
Please see the attached photo's:

I find it somewhat odd that one tree has ripening fruit and the other tree has green fruit.
Maybe this is a normal occurrence.
The ripening fruit is all rather small, not a lot bigger than a golf ball. I have picked a couple of them. I am impressed with the flavor, the burning flavor in my throat is now absent. I have honestly bought "Cuties" from the store that tasted worse.

I'm blaming the small fruit size on the lack of fertilizer.

The tree with the fruit that is still green, I don't know about. Maybe it just didn't have any new growth to set fruit on. The fruit is bigger on this tree.

Based on tree size, can anyone recommend the proper amount of Osmocote Plus for next spring's application?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Arctic Frost Satsuma Problem
« on: May 31, 2020, 04:39:09 PM »
I have two Arctic Frost Satsuma trees that I have had for around five years.
They have never been healthy. I had one orange the first year.
If I can't figure out what's going on with them, I'm going to try to rehome them and give someone else a shot with them.

In the past, I was pretty successful with citrus. A couple of things have changed in my setup. (1) I stained my deck a dark brown. (2) Jungle growth potting mix is no longer available.

I don't know if these factors have anything to do with my problems.

I have tried using Osmocote Citrus time release in the past, and this year I'm using Jacks Professional 20-20-20 water-soluble. The Jacks does have .0125% Boron

Please take a look at the photos and make a recommendation.

Thanks in advance for anyone's help

Citrus General Discussion / Dekopon Seeds- True to Parent?
« on: February 28, 2018, 08:22:22 PM »
Are Dekopon seeds true to the parent?
I have a number of seedlings and want to know if they are worth keeping.
I don't want to invest many years into them only to be disappointed.

Thank You.

Citrus General Discussion / Dekopon Seed Germination
« on: February 02, 2018, 08:29:36 PM »
I have some Dekopon seed that I was fortunate to find in fruit that I purchased from Whole Foods this week.
I have around 17 seeds. Most appear small, and I would say immature.

What is the recommended way to attempt to get these seed to germinate? Do I need to dry them first?

Thanks

Citrus General Discussion / Meyer Lemon Limb Question
« on: January 30, 2016, 05:26:03 PM »
Can anyone look at the photo of my tree. I concerned with a limb that emerged last summer. It was vigorous growing and was growing upwards at an angle that was a little steep for my taste.

Currently I have tie wrapped a piece of 1/4 copper tubing to the limb to shape it downward. I believe this will correct the upward growth.

This limb does not appear to have any flower buds on it and the leaves are larger than the leaves on the other limbs. The other limbs appear to be developing nice flower buds.

My question is, will this limb ever amount to anything? or is it a limb that will never produce fruit?

Thanks in advance

Greg

Citrus General Discussion / Winter Light Recommendation Including Link
« on: November 16, 2015, 01:23:13 PM »
Millet, Or Anyone with lighting experience,

Can you look at these lights on Amazon and make a recommendation as to which if any would be good for my Meyer lemon tree?
I have built an insulated (minimal) 6 ft a 6 ft cube on a covered portion of my deck. My plan is to roll the tree out daily when the temperature goes above freezing.

I'm afraid that rolling the tree out everyday is going to get old in a hurry, so I was considering adding a light. I plan to add a small electric space heater to keep the temperature around 34 deg on the cold nights.

There are a variety of light fixtures on the Amazon page. From 2 ft 2 tube all the way to 4 ft 12 tubes. I would like to buy the most economical fixture that will provide the correct light intensity.

Sorry I forgot to add the link. Here it is:
Here is the link to the light (s):

Citrus General Discussion / Meyer lemon Indoors For Winter - Spring Bloom
« on: November 02, 2015, 11:44:11 AM »
Thanks Millet for clarifying the light spectrum question regarding my windows.
I do have one additional question, If I bring in my tree for the winter, what will it do when I return it to the patio in the spring?
Will it begin blooming? I know that it will not receive the below 68 Deg temps that from what I have read, initiate the bloom cycle.

Thanks
