Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango blooming now.
« on: December 04, 2017, 08:15:29 PM »
Surprised to see some panicles at the bottom half of my Himsagar. Anyone else's mango in bloom?

My Himsagar is very prone to fungus. It seems to be unaffected.

Hello guys, my dragonfuit is flowering for the first time, it is big. Is this normal?

Same with my Valencia pride, only 7 fruits remaining. I just tied a couple of TomCat rat poison on the branches where the fruits are and they were gone the following day but I did not see any dead squirrels. I wouldn't call it collusion, the squirrels are merely donating to the racoon foundation.

Yes, fruiting jackfruit may not do well in containers.
Here is a pic of one mango tree

There is another fruiting tree 20 feet away from this and it looks like a Kent variety.

5
I was surprised to see mature fruiting mango trees, jackfruit, sugar apples and avocado trees last weekend when I visited a friend there.

No, it's my friend's neighbor in Orlando. I'm back in Punta Gorda now but I asked my friend to ask his Chinese neighbor for seeds when they ripen or maybe Scion.

These look like oversized nam doc mai and somewhat S shaped. You can see the relative size of the fruit to the leaves. They are large!

My jackfruit started bearing fruit, I have no clue when is the fruit ready to pick.
Here is the pic

Nevermind, found the answer. It's not ready yet.

VP is vigorous if not pruned. Another one that grows vigrously IME is Himsagar but it is prone to black sooty mold. I haven't tried the fruit yet because all the fruits fell off the tree. Wikipedia claimsit is the king of mangoes.

I have to say that my yard has a few papaya trees that passed their fruiting prime and have small fruits that I don't bother to pick and just let rot in the tree until they fall off. The other house has none. Anyone that has the same experience can chime in or can someone with annonas try a few papaya around and see (they grow and fruit rather fast).

I have a young green (2yrs or so) and a smaller red that are loaded with fruits, more than 30 each. Curiously,  I never hand pollinate at all. It looks like I have natural pollinatorsin this area but not in my other house less than 20 miles away! My tree there has NO fruit at all.

Picked up this coconut palm for $25, Just checking to make sure its correctly ID, it looks like my red dwarf, wanted to make sure.

Is it the same as dwarf golden coconut? Mine has a few fruits. Just picked one, got to drink coconut water and eat fresh, soft coconut meat.

Lost my mun kun si a while back. My other trees are doing really well. My VP had 3 spurts of flowers this year, so I have fruits in 3 different sizes.

Did you have blueberry before?

That coconut in the video is definitely not macapuno. Macapuno may have some water depending on the stage it was harvested. As the fruit ages, the meat grows toward the center eventually almost filling the entire cavity. I have seen one with a clear jelly in the center and the rest is soft meat. I must say that the raw macapuno I tried was rather flat.

« on: March 18, 2017, 08:19:59 PM »
I am making my own worm castings. Did my research on the net. I am using an old green recycling bin and starter earthworms bought from Uncle Jim's. No expense other than the cost of the worms. I feed them veggie and fruit scraps. I have not used any castings yet but it's looking good. I also do composting. Just this afternoon I started brewing compost tea with molasses. Plan to use this on my veggie garden and trees.

I'm afraid it is. The shriveled green trunk and droopy leaves spell doom IMHO.

Spaugh,  that's a pretty tree. They look decorative when in full bloom, then reward you with delicious fruits after. How's the fruit ?

What variety jegpg1.
I really don't remember the variety. I thought it will not do well in Florida and I just took it for granted. My mother planted it on the ground because I didn't care for it but when I tried the fruit, I wanted more. They peaches I used to buy in NY were no match.
