I know some plants are spreading trough their roots but I have never seen this with a Garcinia . The tree in question has flowered in abundance for several years never fruited that I know . Now cleaning the area I noticed a healthy plant 2 meters away from the original . Or the answer to my question is yes or there was a fruit that I did not see ...What do you think ? I believe the tree is a G. hombroniana so male and female would be needed to produce .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Luc , the Mexican Garcinia guy , remember ?
« on: December 29, 2021, 07:06:54 PM »
Hi you all , after a long absence due to several health problems and the passing of my son , now I am really trying to be a - be back .

My orchard during this period of total neglect reverted into a jungle , fortunately after cleaning I was surprised that most of my rare jaboticaba did survive even under 1 meter of weeds , most were stunted but after being exposed to full sun ( some did not enjoy that and suffered ) and a short 2021 rainy-season , now they are thriving .

The buildings did not fare so well they were invaded , vandalized and robbed of everything that was not too heavy to carry....

This year 2021 because so many people asked me I still went looking for the Mexican Garcinia , this never in my 20 plus years in this area happened ....found only a few fruits .....I am sure my dear friend Raul Gonzales will confirm this , unless he got them all before I went for them .....LOL.....

Dear friends , please don't overload me with messages , I am too old and not looking forward to answer a multitude of questions that you can find the answers for in this forum . BTW my I Mack is also old , not as old as I am...LOL... but , gives me problems some time , shutting of in the middle of a conversation , not wanting to start ....name it ....

I wish you all a happy 2022 , full of new exciting fruits .

Luc

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Found a new Mexican Jungle fruit today .
« on: March 07, 2019, 07:37:42 PM »
Strolling trough the jungle today I noticed lots of birds and other wildlife around and in a specific tree , closer by there was this wonderful fragrance like a very strong abricot smell . Several fruits on the ground , some still green probably knocked of by the birds , others a pink going to red colour , those 1/2 ripe , I guess , gave of this great perfume . Fruits were roundish , between 5 and 7 cm . Even those that had a good colour were still kinda hard , so when cutting them open they had an even stronger smell , 1 cm pulp between and around the seeds . The seeds looked like they could be some sort of Pouteria . I gotta go back in a week or so . I did take a small bite of one of the fruits , sweet and very pleasant ...and the best thing is I am still alive ....you never know

Now the bad part ....most of you know my computer crashed ...finally got it back a few days ago ....they did a lousy job ....I lost lots of files , pictures ...name it ....and even though I took quiete a few pics I could not upload them to my computer from my camera and obviously cannot post them at this time .

Been going trough my old Mexican books to try to find more info ....none ...anyway I am very excited . So if these no good computer technicians keep their word , next week you'll see some pics

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garcinia hombroniana question
« on: January 15, 2019, 04:27:21 PM »
Is there a slight possibility that a female tree may have some hermaphrodite flowers ? My gorgeous 5 plus meter tree has been flowering for several years , never a fruit , I 'd hate to cut it down .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ID request .
« on: September 21, 2018, 06:16:29 PM »
These pictures were sent to me for ID , no further info available at this point  . The local name is Coloc or Kolok , this , according to old Mexican books , refers to Talisia floresii . Grows in the Golf of Mexico Yucatan area . With some luck later I may be able to post pics of a cut fruit , size and flavor ....My first impression is ...some type of sapote ...

As of today I am starting a little black book translating nicknames into who they really are , address etc... Some people are really good ( thank you guys )  at giving their full name and address when placing an order , others are not....also when answering ..no subject .....Basically I am just a collector trying to get a little income once in a while besides my miserable pension . I wonder what real seed sellers like Oscar ( Fruitlovers ) must go trough.....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How do you kill a full grown cocconut tree ?
« on: August 16, 2018, 06:44:38 PM »
First I need to mention it is in the neighbor's garden so forget the chainsaw...it's gotta be discreet ...After trying to talk with him for several years to prune his trees ( I'd even pay for it ) that are destroying the fence I paid for and breaking the trees on my side ( falling dried branches and coconuts ) no results ....  I lost already several of Anestor's rare Eugenias and a row of Abiu trees is constantly broken ....  I talked to the authorities but they don't give a damn . So , I am ready for a ' Black op's ' raid ...

Dear friends , even though this is an endemic fruit here in Mexico ( I don't grow it myself because I am not really crazy about the taste and the trees are sooo large  , but I must say there are some varieties that are  " WHOW " )

The question is : How long do these seeds stay alive ....
