Tropical Fruit Discussion / Industrial garden hoses
« on: June 15, 2018, 11:21:21 PM »
You guys who have been through lots of garden hoses, do you have a favorite?  Anyone with big farm or grow outfit have leads on the idustrial hoses?

I have 10 apex industrial hoses.  The red no kink hose material is good but they started putting aluminum ends on them and now they get stuck to brass outlets.  Need to find some new hoses asap.  Something stout enough I can leave the water on all the time and not worry of bursting and has to be brass hardware.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya questions
« on: May 21, 2018, 05:44:29 PM »
Ive got 3 solo plants started in 5 gal pots from seeds out of grocery store fruit. I have a few questions to make sure they do ok after moving to the ground.

1.) Do I need all 3?  I really only want to grow one but know they may need a male and female to produce?  Should I plant 1, 2, or 3?

2.) Spacing of the plants?  10ft?  They are going on a hillside in fullsun, I expect them to get big.

3.) Ammending?  Cow manure, chicken manure ok?  Top dress with mulch, what else?

4.) Wind, its windy here.  Not much I can do about it.  Can give them a little shelter but they will be getting some wind.  Is it a deal breaker?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rainbow Eucalyptus
« on: May 08, 2018, 08:41:14 PM »
Anyone growing it in CA?  I have a lot of extra RO waste water I'm looking to water something with.  Will it grow here?  Maybe the air is too dry?  Other eucalyptus does quite well (invasive).

Any other suggestions what I can grow with really hard waste water?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Stone fruits?
« on: March 27, 2018, 07:29:58 PM »
Hows it looking?  I have most trees doing nothing yet.  A couple starting to flower.  And this florida prince peach is almost ripe!  3 or 4 more weeks to go before they are in season.

I put in about about 30 stone fruit trees in the last 2 years.  Im starting to think that may have been a big mistake with the weather we had this winter. May have to switch to mangos.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hoop house
« on: November 21, 2017, 04:36:53 PM »
Anyone made one of these?  I am making one and have a few questions for those with experience using 6mil UV poly on a greenhouse type structure.  Specifically I am trying to determine the best method of attaching the poly to the end rails and also trying to decide if the galvanized hoops need to be painted white to reduce heat?  Also do the perlin clamps need something on them to keep the poly from rubbing on them or just go ahead and lay it right on top of the hoops and perlin clamps?

« on: September 26, 2017, 04:47:06 PM »
Is anyone growing these inland or in the desert?  Been waiting to put them in the ground but worried they will not be able to take full sun.  The surinam cherry seems ok in fjll sun here, I have a grumichama, putomba and rio grand cherry that need to be planted.  How much dry heat can they take?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Holy Hell Santa Annas
« on: September 03, 2017, 01:37:51 PM »
Was a real scorcher here yesterday.  111F, 22% humidity and blowing hard winds.  The weather put a real smackdown on my avocado and other fruit trees.  I have been watering daily and they havent dropped any fruit!  Seems watering extra heavy in these conditions is crucial. To top it off our air conditioner went out right at the peak of the heat yesterday.  Now we are just roasting hoping summer will end soon.

Photo is a newly planted jacaranda tree with a avocado tree down below getting blasted by a desert wind.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Grow lights LED
« on: July 28, 2017, 04:38:51 PM »
I have a 130W actual wattage and 260 actual wattage grow lamps for sale.  They are the equivalent of 300 and 600 watt HID lamps.

They are VIPARSPECTRA reflector series 300 and 600 models.

75$, and 150$, free shipping.

They were only used for a few months over winter and I am not going to be able to use them again next winter with a new baby on the way. These are super bright and will work wonders on your cold tender plants.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passiflora spacing
« on: July 25, 2017, 03:18:45 PM »
Ive got 100ft of 6ft tall fence I am going to put passion fruit on.  I picked up a few different ones at the nursery and the spacing recommendation is different on each one ranging from 6ft to 15ft spacing.

What do you guys think?  Depends on the variety or they pretty much all get the same size?  Am I going to regret planting these things for any reason?
