Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jaboticabaholics Anonymous
« on: February 24, 2015, 05:46:33 PM »
I suppose I need to join the support group here too. I got one on recommendation from backyard nurseryman. Then once I read about how well they produce, albeit in many years, I got a good deal on some so I got another 4 figuring "hey, they're small now, and if I end up liking them I'll be pissed in 8 years if I have to wait another 8 for the new ones to start producing.".

So they grew all shrubby and unpruned and frankly sort of ugly for a while until I found the forum full of enablers here. Once I pruned them I was actually sort of excited about how they looked, and started reading through this thread.

Then I found out there are jabos that start fruiting in 3 years! So I ordered three from Adam right before the freeze, and these beauties got here today:

This weekend we had a thing in Tampa, and we stopped by Wayne's place in Bradenton to take a look at his Dream annona and do the usual property tour. In addition to being surprised by 3 grafted Dream ready to rock that I wasn't expecting until May, he had a 5.5' tall Grimal jaboticaba!

It may just be my imagination or the addiction talking, but is this thing thinking about fruiting?

Wayne is in Bradenton, about 1.5hrs north of us here in SWFL. He said he would have some available late spring early summer. Steve at Fruitscapes in Bokeelia should be getting some cuttings from Wayne and said he anticipates having some ready hopefully sometime late summer. Adam had scions of Dream available as of a few days ago, not sure on whole plants.

Rollinia is really nice. You might also try a Dream atemoya. Member reviews here seemed to indicate it is a pretty good producer, and the winter fruit has good flavor whereas other off-season atemoya can be a little bland.

Thanks Adam! Should I be shooting for like 2-3 main trunks and encouraging them to go as vertical as possible? I kind of had a picture of whatever those african Savannah trees are that are all branches and a wide but thin canopy of leaves at the top.

Thanks! Here's #4 after cleaning up the bottom some. I'm thinking the branch crossing the center is coming out, and that might be about it. Maybe taking those smaller two branches on the inside out to leave the bigger outside two and encourage just them, but it hurts taking that much wood off.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba pruning advice

I've got a few youngish jaboticaba that I recently pruned some of the smaller lower branches off of, and wanted to get some input on how they look, and if I was too gentle or harsh on them. Thanks.

This one is the oldest, about 4' tall.

#2 here is probably about 2.5' or so.

#3 also in the 2-3 foot range.

These last two I have yet to trim up, probably doing that in just a minute.

For planning sun/shade when stacking trees, you might check out the sun surveyor app. It's pricey ($6.99) for an app, but the paid version gives you an augmented reality of the sun's path on any day of the year. As a guy who is trying to cram as many fruit trees into 1/3 acre, that was 7 bucks well spent.

^A screenshot from inside our office. 100% shade there apparently.

Bit of thread necromancy here, but I've got a black sapote I bought from ECHO a year or two ago labeled as Wilson Seedless. It has yet to actually hold fruit, just the usual bloom and drop thing they like to do. (Edited for typos)

I don't have any advice, but I'm experiencing the same thing. I hadn't fertilized it in a while, and have started giving it a little fish fertilizer recently to see if that helps. I'll let you know of flowers suddenly start appearing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Atemoya rootstock for FL
« on: February 07, 2015, 08:46:07 AM »
Is there a general consensus on the best rootstock for atemoya here in FL, particularly SWFL? It seems like a lot of nurseries prefer to use sugar apple to keep them a little more controllable, but here I've seen a few comments along the lines of "eww, sugar apple root stock" especially in regards to the Lisa cultivar. I've got some atemoya, sugar apple and pond apple (requires a sugar apple intergraft I've heard) seeds and am planning on propagating some atemoya in the future, and just wanted to get an idea what's worked well for others. Thanks in advance.

My kids would freak if I got rid of this tree, trading some cuttings would be cool. Do you still have a good assortment of loquats? I've got a seedling tree I'm planning on cocktail-ifying, and some nice varieties to graft onto there would be nice. If you'd rather chat by email mine is dom (at) dominicleotti (dot) com

^It's the one on the left, the one on the R was from ECHO just labeled as "Black mulberry"

I got it from Riverside Nursery up the road from me on SR80 in Fort Myers about 3 years ago. I can't remember exactly, but I think it was my first fruit tree at this house. Overall I haven't been too impressed with its growth rate (again though, neglect), but it is usually pretty loaded with berries. I'll get a picture of it for you tomorrow morning.

Yep, that looks about right. Last season the berries were smaller, but I did neglect the crap out of it.

Wait, Rollinia deliciosa fruits ok in a little shade? Excellent, that opens up a spot or two I hadn't planned on being available for annonas! I take it sugar apple and atemoya are less forgiving of less sun?

you are correct sir!

please try growing Biriba! maybe one day I can buy some fruit from your tree??

Oh yeah, picking up a tree or two from Fruitscapes this weekend if he has some. Otherwise maybe I'll get lucky this weekend at Fruit and Spice park and find some fruit and seeds on the ground.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Atemoya Question?
« on: February 05, 2015, 11:18:55 AM »
I'm a n00b to annonas so far, but from my understanding most need hand pollenation, and those that don't will still set more and bigger fruit if you go ahead and hand pollenate anyway. Geffner is one that does well down here in FL without hand pollenating, and so does the Dream cultivar that Wayne Clifton is selling.

Well, on second thought maybe it is a legit Illinois Everbearing. It fits the description Raintree gives pretty well. http://www.raintreenursery.com/Illinois_Everbearing_mulberry.html

I've got what was labeled as an Illinois everbearing, but it doesn't make 2.5" fruit as most of the descriptions I'm seeing online say. Mine has looked a little sad for a while for some reason, and usually makes a ton of 1" fruit.

I'll spread the word, those are beautiful trees.

For anyone interested, that email is good, and he says he hopes to have some ready late spring/early summer.

Awesome, thanks!
