Tropical Fruit Discussion / eugenia repanda!
« on: January 26, 2015, 11:19:54 PM »
The eugenia repanda (pitanga-jambo or ñangapiré negro) are ripening now, the last year I could try just 2 of them, but now half of the plants produced fruits (at different times, there are even some of them with flowers and fruits)... they should be black when ripe, but I tasted 2 red unripe ones and they were very good!!!, like a bing cherry (very different taste to e. uniflora -and I love unifloras- ).

The most interesting feature to me is that they can fruit in full shade.

If you like acid, small (1 to 1.5 cm) and/or myrtaceae fruits, you must have it :-D

« on: January 26, 2015, 07:31:28 PM »
Do not yield to the touch, are tough, I imagine they are not ripe, no?

The guy who tried them said they have little flavor now...

Hello, the organic store in my town got jack fruit! so I'm very excited ... but do not know if it is ripe or not, how could I  know it?

On the other hand, It released some latex and it is very very sticky: what is the best way to clean the latex of your hands? alcohol? Fruit should be opened wearing gloves? is it the latex too toxic ?

It weighs 15 lbs (6.7 kilos)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / uvaia fruiting for the first time!
« on: December 15, 2014, 01:20:43 PM »

Had not seen this fruit until today, which went to water the plant and see if there were newly fruits on the last flowers ... but this larger fruit is of an earlier flowering of about 1 or 2 months ago, is the only current fruit from that past bloom ... fruits that are taking shape now are smaller, of course.

I hope to try it for the first time soon (maybe 2 months?)!

They are pear shaped and I dont know if would be the acid or the sweet type...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / pitangatuba
« on: November 20, 2014, 04:37:56 PM »
I thought it was dead!

I received the plant in winter, 15cm tall...  the new growth dried, it started to loose some leaves... then all of them... then in the spring it didnt sprouted! so, I cut a piece of trunk and it was not green..... so I thought it was dead!

Today I pulled the tree because I would liked to sow some other seed in that pot and...

I saw with astonishment that there were branches sprouting under the soil!, one having leaves under the earth: how strange .. anyone has seen this behavior?

what surprises me is that the leaves were underground leaves ... what sense would it make?

260
It is a very happy moment for me, 1½ years after sowing in a pot, I planted directly into the ground of the front garden where there are no frosts at all, so I hope to have some fruits in 2 or 3 years, wish me luck!

Hi, I have several seeds of red eugenia uniflora I'm eating now, I planted many others ... but I will keep a lot of seeds to share later with another people,

what you recommend to keep them? I thought about puting them into ziploc bags in the fridge with sphagnum moss, is that right? (4ºc)

This scientific paper says that can last six months with 20% moisture, but does not clarify if placed in the refrigerator or at room temperature ... (here in my house is hot, 27 ° C)

" The seeds of Eugenia uniflora L. (Myrtaceae) also exhibit short storability, but higher than I. vera, and could be stored for six months under controlled conditions (Barbedo et al., 1998). Among other Eugenia species, E. uniflora seeds are the most tolerant, keeping their germinability with moisture content of 20% (Delgado and Barbedo, 2007)."

Also, I see the sphagnum is somewhat dry... I dont know if I should wet it more...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / tasting lychee for the first time
« on: November 12, 2014, 01:10:12 PM »
very good fruit, one of the best I ever tried, just like a very good green grape (uva torrontés) but better: sweeter

In my country is very difficult to find them, but I use to buy rare things at an organic food store, so this people told me they could get lychee and I just shouted!

$110 pesos per kg, so something like 13 usd per 1 kg

I hope the seeds will sprout!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / first black surinan cherry of the season
« on: October 31, 2014, 06:55:20 PM »
I waited for 1 year to try this fruit again, last year the tree had one and it was spectacular, this year there are 12 fruits on the tree;

Recently while playing fruits to take some photos, one of them fell off, it was not fully ripe since it had a brown or burgundy colour, but when I tried it I found it very good, sharp/acid and sweet, excellent, will report if the 100% black colour are better (maybe tomorrow): I suppose so.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / jaboticaba to ID (myrciaria coronata?)

Very good seed to pulp ratio, very sweet, fruit size up to 2.7cm, it bears fruit 2 times per year

Tropical Fruit Discussion / unripe jaboticabas?
« on: October 24, 2014, 04:20:12 PM »
Hi, I received a very good package of jaboticaba fruits from Misiones, I have some plants from seeds from the mother tree, and this time the seller sent me 1 kilo of fruits.

But I think they are unripe: very acid, and the pulp is red/rose/white, not just white... the skin has a red tone too, should it be full black if they where m. coronata?

what do you think, this could be another myrciaria coronata, cauliflora or what? (I can see the crown)

should I leave the fruits outside the fridge and wait for 2 to 3 days till they ripe? (they say near apples will get ripe faster...)

Most are hard, but some are soft and have worms from the fruit fly, then I guess those never will ripen: is it normal to be attacked by fruit flies? the skin is thick and tough.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I ate my first cherimoya today!
« on: October 10, 2014, 08:32:44 AM »
It was good, perhaps very good, but I distrust about the correct ripeness of the fruit (comes from Chile and was a very expensive price, 120 pesos each, something like USD 14): Maybe it was harvested too green and not delivering its full potential. The high value is due to import prices and people think it is anticarcinogenic: is that true?

It tastes sweet (the level of a banana) and bitter very nice (I can not find similarity to anything), I expected it to be somewhat acidic but have not found almost acidity.

Are there other custard apples that are somewhat acidic?

Anyway I liked it, and every time I try another piece, I Like it more!. The seeds are annoying, but they come off easily enough, perhaps about 50 per fruit. The creamy texture is very nice, maybe this is the most interesting feature to me.

I took pictures, I dont know what it the ideal ripeness stage: when it starts to get brown? When very brown or black?

When the skin is green it is in an immature state?

Sorry for all the questions, but it is my first time with cherimoya: Does the photos remind some variety you guys have tried?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / campomanesia teas: should I be afraid?
« on: October 03, 2014, 08:54:36 AM »
Hello, I'd love to make tea with leaves of chamba / palillo (lineatifolia Campomanesia) because the leaves have an exquisite aroma when crushed (as a mixture of oregano and lemon), but I have some fear, because I never take things that have no information whether they are edible.

Then I searched the internet and at Brazil teas are made with several campomanesias, in fact there are studies about and commercial products, but the teas are being made with other Campomanesia species (xanthocarpa, reitziana and so on).

see:

http://shopnatural.com.br/chaguabiroba.html
http://siaibib01.univali.br/pdf/Osvaldo%20do%20Rosario%20Neto.pdf

So here's my question: Would it be wrong to assume that tea of Campomanesia  lineatifolia should do no harm my health, since there are teas on the market from other Campomanesia species?

I've made guava leaf tea and guabiju and are very good to the taste, I have had no problems.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / guabiju in very bad shape
« on: September 27, 2014, 01:03:06 PM »
myrcianthes pungens is a very hard species, but this potted tree in the house of my parents seems to be dying...

what could be happening? it's not because too much water or fertilizer, neither because of lack of water... so we dont understand what could be happening... there are other myrtaceae potted trees next to this one, with the same care, and are all doing very good! psidium, eugenias, all ok, but this guabiju ... just look:

it would be wise to prune it?
