Tropical Fruit Discussion / zabala fruit
« on: April 24, 2013, 03:56:04 PM »
Does anyone here have any experience regarding zabala fruit (Lardizabala biternata)?  It sounds interesting but info I have on it is very sketchy.  I hear it is very highly regarded in Chile but nothing specific regarding flavor.  I have heard things suggesting it will take a fair amount of heat but it evidently also requires cold stratification to germinate so I don't know if it would survive here in my area in HI.  I guess at least with the cold stratification requirement, we wouldn't have to worry about it getting "weedy" if it lives & fruits here.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / More bush tucker discussion
« on: March 26, 2013, 12:07:21 AM »
OK, so the Aussie native orange (Capparis lasiaantha) sounds like a loser.  Previous discussion on the topic seemed to reveal few, if any, winners in the Aussie bush tucker.  Any opinions regarding Diploglottis spp. (I have small leaf tamarind, D. campbellii)?  How about lemon aspen (Acronychia acidula -- I think there was an earlier post indicating it was too acid or too assertive or something along those lines)?

Finally, something more like a spice, lemon scented myrtle (Backhousia citriodora)?  I have heard comments that it is "more lemon than lemon" and sounds intriguing as a spice / flavoring.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Aussie "Native Orange"
« on: March 25, 2013, 12:04:18 PM »
Here is an inquiry to our Aussie friends:  what is your opinion of Capparis lasiantha (I have seen this called "native orange").  I have seen various things about it in print and would like to get the straight story from our friends in Oz.  (By the way, for those who are not familiar with it, this is not even remotely a citrus fruit; it is in the caper family.)

Thanks,
John

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ndea
« on: March 24, 2013, 12:44:50 AM »
Just wondering if anyone has experience with ndea (Sarcocephalus xanthoxylon) seedlings.  I had a lot germinate but lost most to damping off or some other similar problem (weird, no signs of wilted or withered seedlings -- just appeared to be gone like they never existed).  In any event, it appears that I got over that hump and the seedlings are getting larger but still not starting to appear "tree like" (most fruit trees & shrubs tend to develop a woody look after a while) -- these are still looking kind of herbaceous.  I started them in a flat since they seeds are so tiny and I plan on potting them up into real pots but I don't want to try to move them yet as they seem too delicate.

Any advice anyone can give would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

I don't know if members are aware of this site but I came across it while researching Garcinias:

It does also have a limited number of other genera on the site.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lepisanthes alata
« on: March 15, 2013, 01:48:24 AM »
Lepisanthes alata  Just wondering if anyone is familiar with this fruit?  Things I have read report it is sweet or sweet and pungent (?), however most sources talk mainly about its ornamental qualities so I am guessing it is not particularly palatable (if not, why grow it for looks & not eat the fruit??).

Thanks,
John

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / sunshine seeds
« on: March 12, 2013, 05:20:42 PM »
Has anyone had any positive results from seeds from Sunshine seeds in Germany?  ( http://www.sunshine-seeds.de/index.php?language=en )  I didn't see much positive about them in the "on line seed sources" discussion but wanted to see if there is any other or newer information.  I made a sizable order about a year ago for a number of different fruit trees / shrubs & got zero germination.  They list some really interesting things from time to time that I have not seen offered anywhere else.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / FL Visit
« on: March 05, 2013, 08:01:00 PM »
I may be visiting the Orlando area in early Dec.  What fruit is typically in season then?  Any suggestions on where to visit that is a reasonable drive from Orlando?  Are the FL Botanical Garden in Largo and Marie Selby in Sarasota worth a visit for their fruit (if any)?

Thanks,
John

Just wondering if anyone has picked up this book from Kew:
http://congotrees.rbge.org.uk/

The book looks interesting but I am wondering if there is a lot more "meat" in the book than offered on the website.  I'd appreciate a review from anyone who might have it.

While doing a search on one of the less common Baccaurea species, I came across this page.  I searched this site before & never found this -- I wonder what else is hidden there but not easy to find ...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona hybrids
« on: February 16, 2013, 02:52:50 PM »
I recall reading in the past about work on interspecific hybrids in Annona (or even intergeneric with Rollinia or Duguetia).  I believe that work was being done in the US, Australia, South Africa, & Israel however, all I ever saw was vague references to work being done.  Does anyone know any good resources on this or can anyone shed any light on things that may have been introduced as a result?  One of our local nurseries will graft trees with a atemoya backcrossed onto squamosa.  I plan on picking up a tree or two of that be I am wondering if there is anything else out there...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dioecious trees
« on: February 15, 2013, 12:38:03 PM »
I have something I am hoping to do as I get my orchard established and it just want to bounce the idea off of the group to see if there are any potential problems I am missing.  On dioecious trees, I am thinking of top working male trees (if I have more than I need) and grafting female scions onto them; I may even leave a few male branches.  Anyone see anything I might be missing here why that may not work?  The trees that come to mind are mainly Baccaurea and Garcinia but there could be others as things progress.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Apocynaceae
« on: February 11, 2013, 02:32:14 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of where seeds for Apocynaceae may be available?  I am especially interested in Willughbeia (I know Red Durian has these - looking for other species as well).  I am also interested in some of the African genera like Landolphia, Saba, Ancylobotrys, and Clitandra.  I know that Roy Danforth did distribute some seeds of some of the Africans, including the eta that does not "turn sour".  (Unfortunately, it sounds like Roy is no longer in that part of the Congo.)  I would be interested in any of the Africans that have good flavor.  I appreciate any leads that members can give me.

Thanks,
John
