Flowering Lisa Atemoya
« on: September 24, 2014, 06:50:44 PM »
My Lisa Atemoya is flowering, should I let it try and fruit? I don't know if this is the right time of year or not. Anyone have any advice?

My cherimoyas and atemoyas still have some flowers, but most have already set and are holding small fruitlets.  That's San Diego.  Not sure what season is for East Coast.

What are your concerns with letting it fruit?  Is the tree small?

I would let them set fruits. I have flower in all my annonas but I stop pollinating in Aug. Cangrejo's African Pride had excellent fruits in June this year far from being bland.

My African Pride finally set fruit for the first time in 5 years - has flowered prolifically the last 3 or so, but never set fruit.  It currently holds a single, bouncy-rubber-ball-sized fruitlet.

The tree is very healthy and has finally started to add some height - plan to collect scions and graft from it this year.

I have some annonas growing too and some have flowers, but I keep trying to pull them off now.. it's just not the right time to grow the fruit here in Southern CA.. just let the tree grow bigger and wait for next year!  ;D How big is your tree? If it is just starting to get flowers for the first year, then just pull them off..

Disagree. If you have flowers now let them set fruits.... if your tree is 3+years old it's not going to stung the tree.

It is almost normal to have a small second crop on sugar-apples and atemoyas after New Years.

ya JF u r in the annona vortex  :D..i think the best region in USA for Cherimoya, atemoya...

in central FL the season is dead after the frost comes (usually Dec or Feb at latest)....I'm not sure about AlexO's situation, but I"m guessing its similar to mine being that he's in Ft Pierce.

Well we will see, I am taking both of your advice and picking you off all but two flowers. We will see if it even sets fruit.
Thanks so much!

a lot of my fruitlets have dropped this year due to the drought. I'm lucky if I harvest 125 annonas from my 4 trees

oh, that's good JF thanks.. my trees aren't as old as yours, but I do love seeing the pictures of your trees with fruit  ;D... I actually got my annona trees from Ethan just this June.. they have grown a lot (like the one below.. before/after).. anyways, I think they have grown a lot..haha, still nothing like yours though.. so what should I do? Do I let the flowers just grow, or pluck them off so the plant can grow bigger? I have removed a few, but I just got lazy after work so I just let them try now..

Let them hold fruit if they will... This tree grows like a weed in SoCal.  In no time, you'll be pruning it back just to keep it manageable.

yours will be full of fruits by no time. Be sure to prune, strip and hand pollinate.

Hi JF, what did you mean by "strip"? I saw another post in the forum talking about stripping off the leaves around March to induce flowering? Was that it? Thanks.
