The "Psidium controversy"
« on: December 16, 2014, 06:11:48 PM »
Dear members, I recently bought a specimen of "araçá goiaba" (in Portuguese), Psidium guianense Sw. Timon. However, I am not sure about this classification. It may be mispeled and be Psidium guianensis instead. It could also be Psidium guineense instead. Or even something else. I know there is a lot of discussion about some Psidium species and probably different experts will say different things. Anyway, here  go some pictures, maybe one of you will be able to cast more light on this tricky issue.
It was shipped in a box and arrived to my island 9 days later, so the plant was not in the best shape when I planted it a few days ago.
Thanks in advance,

T

As far as the nomenclature, the correct spelling is Psidium guineense Sw.

P.guianensis and P. guianense are common mis-spellings, and are not valid names. However, there is a valid species, Psidium guyanense Pers. (Just to confuse things further LOL)

From the photo of the immature plant, I also believe that what you have may not be Psidium guineese.

Hope this helps.

I recently took some photos at the San Diego Zoo of the Psidium guineense there.  If the plant at the zoo is accurately identified, the leaves look more elliptic and narrow at the apex than the seedling you have.

Thank you for the info, guys! the plant is much bigger now, I'll post a picture when I am back in the Azores in two weeks from now.
I belive it is a Psidium longipetiolatum! http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=5571.0

Meanwhile, I have also acquired a Psidium guineense, will post a picture too.

Cheers,

T

Azorean, if you break a leaf of the supposed psidium longipetiolatum and smell it, how does it tastes? mines taste very good, acid (some citric note)... while the p. guineense doesnt smell so nice...

to me, the best smelling psidium leaves are p. eugeniaefolia and p. longipetiolatum

Yes, huertasurbanas, P. longipetiolatum smells great, while P. guineense has no smell at all!
