VIDEO: How to Graft Annonas (illama, atemoya, cherimoya)
« on: February 15, 2016, 01:05:36 PM »
I'm excited to announce, the "How to Graft Annonas" video is ready.

The video shows how to graft the "Dream" (atemoya, cherimoya, whatever...i just call it an Annona  ::) :D, and the "Genova Red illama".

The techniques in this video can be applied to many species of Annona.

Looking forward to it.

For your rootstocks do you typically put them straight into a 3gal, or start them out in 1gal and pot up later? I ask because my cherimoya rootstocks seemed to have half of their roots growing out the bottom of the pot in 1 gal pots, but they weren't any smaller than ones that had been in 3 gal from the start.

Great timing.  I'm looking to graft Cherimoyas this year.  Thanks Adam!

thanks everyone!  glad to know there's some folks who are interested in this subject!

Dom,

sounds like you could step them up into the next size pot, I don't think it will hurt...but be sure to step them up gradually.  It's better to step the tree up, than to leave it rootbound, and risk having it dry out.

BTW, not sure if the video will be uploaded by tonight  :(

because it's over 14 min long, it's taking much longer than we thought to render.

maybe we can have it uploaded by 2-3am tomorrow....but more likely sometime in the afternoon tomorrow.

I will post it here asap.

Awesome video Adam! I love how soft the wood is compared to Jaboticaba. You are truely skilled to be able to graft Jaboticabas with such high success rate. I always enjoy watching your videos.

How does your success rate differ when using only one bud vs using 2 or 3?

thanks everyone!

Dom,
I don't think it makes a difference!  2 or 3 buds is fine.

Age/height aren't as important in my view as diameter is. Basically as long as your rootstock is at least as thick as your scion, you're good to go, with the caveat that anything much smaller than 1/4" will be more difficult.

If I had to guess on age for annona rootstock, I'd say somewhere in the 6mos to 1yr range is good.
