Achachairu Progression
« on: December 18, 2016, 02:12:15 PM »
Just took a picture of my Achachairu today. It was purchased in 2012 from Montoso Gardens. It has really taken off lately. I'm still waiting for it to fruit for the first time. I'm hoping 2017 is the year. It's over 12 ft tall now and the trunk is about as thick as a sofa can. If anyone has any pics of their Achachairu I'd love to see them.

Sweet tree.  Thanks for the pics.  Is it grafted?

Awesome tree. I have yet to tried the fruits but they sound amazing. Hoping to get some seeds or a seedling some time.
The hardest plants to grow are often those most worth growing.

Your tree looks great.  I think you have a good chance of flowering this year.  I have eaten fruit from smaller trees in PR.

I bought a pair from Montoso around the same time.  I just put one in the ground around 5 months ago and the other is still in a 7 gal pot.  I almost killed them twice while in pots by under watering.  I planted the one in a windy spot and it dropped most of its leaves.  With the cooler weather, it is finally pushing some new leaves.  It is 6ft tall by 5ft wide and nearly naked.

Here's a couple of photos of achacharu that are more than 20 years old in Costa Rica.  The development here has been more horizontal than verticle.  The trees were planted at 10m/35' spacing and the very long branches easily overlap. The harvest is impressive and easy enough to pick.  For the best quality you need to be patient and let the yellow fruits turn a very dark yellow/orange for good sweetness.

@seadation,

How big was it when you acquired from Montoso?

When I purchased it it was about 12 inches tall I would say 1 1/2 to two years old but that's just a guess. At the time Montoso sold two sizes I got the larger size.
