Did A Branch Revert Back?
« on: February 10, 2017, 02:58:28 PM »
My Cara Cara produced a large crop of fruit this year.  All the fruit on one of the tree's branches is producing fruit with no Cara Cara pigmentation, but back to the orange pulp of the Washington Navel.  Remember that the Cara Cara mutation was first discovered on a branch of a Washington Navel tree growing in Venezuela .  The branch on my tree must have reverted back.

So could you cut the branch and then do a bud graft of from the same tree to replace it? :)

I don''t want to replace the one branch that is producing the normal fruit of orange color pulp as a Washington Navel Orange.  I think it is neat that this happened, and I want to keep that branch attached to the mother Cara Cara  tree.  O f course a person could take all the buds from that branch and possibly grow Washington Navels, but why do that.  A mature Washington Navel orange tree can be purchased from a dozed suppliers ready to produce fruit.

No I meant the first option, to replace the regular navel branch with a caracara branch. Mostly I was kidding. I wonder if that happens often with sports?

Very cool.  Is there any difference in the flavor?

Betray, yes the orange  (Washington Navel) colored fruit is sweeter.  Taste like a good Washington Navel.
