ChempeJack (A.integer x A. Heterophyllus) How does it fruit?
« on: March 14, 2017, 12:17:56 AM »
I'm curious if chempeJack  (A.integer x A.heterophyllus ) fruits on the trunk like jack or from the branches like chempedak?

This photo was taken just a couple of days ago and is typical for our material.

Both Jak and champedak can fruit from the branches and/or the trunk.

Thank you Radoslav and Vernmented.

Wow Peter, beautiful tree, thanks for sharing the photo! After I posted this question,  I went back and looked at my photos of chempedak and realised they do fruit from trunks and branches near the trunk. Peter, does you fruit taste more like chempedak or jack, latex, is it easy cleaning like chempedak? Thanks again.

My hope is to multi graft my jack fruit tree.

Definitely no latex.  I have a very good champedak, but only the one variety, while we get a range of differences in Jakfruit.  The champajak is a very good fruit with less odor and a little firmer than champedak but not really crunchy, no latex, easy to eat.

1 seed per pack. Seeds are from the delicious Cheena, a jackfruit cross having Chempedak (A. integer) genes. Excellent sweet and smooth flavor with thin skin. Culture is similar to the jackfruit. Fruits are quite large and reach 15-30 pounds. Large tree. Unknown frost tolerance as compared to regular jackfruits. Seeds are fresh, cannot be stored and should be planted on receipt. #3980

Is cheena (chempejack) easier to grow from seeds than the chempedak?
My experience with chempedack has been shocking, 10 out of 10 seedlings died after just  a couple of months for some unknown reason  :(

I grew 4 chempejacks all from different sources. While they don't die as easily chempedak, they have all been very slow.
My Amber jack seedling is fruiting again. It's just like chempajack and grows as easy as jackfruit. I'll  send you the seeds for free. Maybe 2 more months to go.

Our champajak tree is five years old.  It is a seedling that began production on its third year.

Champedak seeds and marang seeds can have problems for us too.  It seems that they germinate very easily but have trouble making the transition from being supported by the seed to living from the developing root system.  I get champedak volunteers on my farm but never marang.  The medium needs something and it works better with coco fiber and charcoal but I'm still not completely out of the woods on this.  I'm interested in hearing more ideas on this issue.
The Jakfruit seeds and champajak seeds do better.  Consequently I am grafting champedak onto Jakfruit seedlings.

ChempeJack seems to grow better than chempedak for me and more cold tolerance.
Good to know you can graft chempedak onto jack, thank you Peter. Do you use cleft/wedge graft?

YES YES YES! That's exactly what i noticed about my chempedak seedlings. They were growing very fast and healthy then it seems that when the FUEL from their own seed finished, the weak and underdevelopped root system couldn't just sustain the growth and the whole plant slowly collapsed.

Hi Ethan,

I hope you still read this thread. How is your chempeJack doing? I am still debating whether to get a tree or not. The seeds i got from Hawaii are not surviving, so my only option is to buy a grafted one from Florida.
Do you ever get any fruit from your tree?

Thanks!!
