Is my tongue a good pollinator?
« on: March 15, 2017, 12:01:11 PM »
Haha
Making out with flowers! :o
It feels pretty natural to do...a couple of swirly motions of the tongue and I got my little sugar pollen boost along with maybe more fruit set. Maybe my DNA tells flower what I need in fruit.
Achachairu flowers are sweet...not like they need help with pollination.
Has anyone else ever experienced? Make me feel like a big bee or bat maybe...or a weird perv
I imagine with a big mustache and beard you would be the ultimate flower kisser/pollen holder...isn't  that what Hairs on pollinators are for?
Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if it's effective with all the spit, bacteria, etc. but if you enjoy it, why not? Lol... Try it out and report back. I doubt there are any studies on it though and I am sure there are more effective ways like using a small paintbrush.

Watch out for bees and other bugs if you have them there.

Yeah, I would be more worried about slugs.  Has rat lung disease made it over to your side of the island yet?

A bee or wasp sting on the tongue would be unfortunate. If you have a dry bristly, thin and elongated tongue that is agile and accurate then maybe it is possible. A paintbrush might be easier.

This sounds like some kind of pickup line,  "hey honey, mind if I pollinate your flowers with my tongue?  "

I haven't had any luck yet with this method. Is it wrong to eat the insects if they crawl in your mouth? I almost feel like it's natures way of selecting against the less intelligent ones...besides, they can be pretty tasty! :P

Wouldn't other more ancient mammals have done it first if it was possible? I would guess that wet pollen grains are not so good as dry ones? And maybe saliva. breaks down the pollen? Bats pollinate flowers, but is it really with their tongues? Anyway you can experiment with it and write a book about your tongue pollination techniques. Micah you'll probably make a fortune.  ;)
