Beautiful fruit, do you know if it's a yellow or white fleshed fruit?

I just clicked on the link and see that it's a golden fleshed variety. Please let us know what you think about the taste when it ripens.

I think Wellspring has them pretty cheap.  They are small though, like a 2" pot.  They just grow the tissue cultures from Agristarts and resell them.

About "Florida Special":

Bred for Florida pineapple production by Libby fruit company. At one time there where 240 acres planted in Immokalee, FL prior to Libby selling to Nestle. Florida Special Pineapple produces a golden-fleshed fruit with great flavor. Ripening fruit has shown to take temperatures down to the mid 30's without internal damage.

I had a good experience ordering pineapples from Kens Nursery so far. None have fruited yet, but I haven't had them that long. They arrived pretty big and healthy-looking, and they have several varieties, for reasonable prices. If you order enough plants, you get free shipping, and may also qualify for a discount. One of the ones I got from there was Florida Special, which I've never tasted, so I'm happy to see a post on it and hope to hear reviews on taste!

Florida Special is a smooth leave plant. And Red Spanish has spines running down its leaves

i guess i can see why you would think Florida special and Red Spanish kinda look alike

How do you folks plant your pineapples? Singly as a focus point plant, along a fence line, in pots or maybe in a pineapple grove?

Regards,

Hi i plant mine in both pots and in the ground... if you plan to grow them in the ground make sure to mix in lots of good compost they will do so much better

Well that answers a question I had.  I wasn't sure which of the two I have, but my leaves are smooth so I have the Florida Special, nice.

Hi where did you buy it from do you remember

I purchased it at a local nursery a month or two ago, Excalibur Fruit Trees  ( http://www.excaliburfruittrees.com/ ).  It was around $15-20 for a 3 gal I think.

Hmm, I thought it was a Spanish Red but the leaves are smooth so it shouldn't so I figures Florida Special.  It wasn't labeled at the nursery.  I looked up the Wild Pink and what little info I found on it describes the leaves as spiny so now I'm confused.

I'll take a pic of mine tomorrow and post it.  Maybe someone could give it a positive ID.

I bought some tissue culture plants in 3" pots from Amazon last October. I transferred them into 1 gallon pots and all are doing fine. They were $21.99 for a four pack with free shipping. I ordered 4 Elite Gold, 4 Florida Special and 8 White Jade plants (they sent 10), see photo. I will plant them in the ground next week when the floodwaters recede.
