New Zill Mango: Carla
« on: April 25, 2017, 08:11:44 PM »
I am told there is a Zill mango variety named Carla released but do not see any items mentioning it.  Does anyone know more about it?

C-12.  Late season (not Very Late).  Looks something like Keitt, but not so large, tastes better, and is more disease resistant.  Good production.

My first two mango trees, in Broward in the 1980s, were Keitt and Kent.

At the time I think Keitt was considered to be relatively disease-resistant.
Are more diseases affecting it these days?

Yes the potential is therebfor both Keitt and Kent to be affected by disease or other problems.  Keitt seems to be susceptible to Bacterial Black Spot.

Keitt is highly susceptible to newer strains of anthracnose and foliar scab.

"Keitt' is moderately disease resistant, which hasn't been enough in the western, high-humidity communities, where the fruits are often quite gross.  But it definitely is better at disease resistance than 'Kent'.

I hear, from Dr. Jonathon Crane, that there seems to be a worse strain of Anthracnose going around, that explains some of the severely damaged trees we have seen.

And then, there are the unconfirmed suspicions of a new-to-here bacterial disease on mangos.
