What type of fruit is this?
« on: May 22, 2017, 08:20:54 AM »
A friend of a friend went to Homestead this weekend and gave this to her, she can't remember what it is and she didn't want it and gave it to  me. She knows I like unusual fruits  :)

All I know is it looks like small guavas but its not.

What is it? How do I know when its ripe and how do I eat it? I did peel one like an apple and it was green inside tasted sort of like a sour apple  :-\

Ilooks like mamoncillo/spanish lime/genila and they are usually sold in bags like that.

Dont tbink it is but easy way to tell if its a june plym by the seed being spikey.

Thanks Skhan and Rob!

After some googling...it seems closer to June plum than spanish lime due to Rob's description of the spikey seed ( the seed is smooth) and I tried one that was a little yellow outside and it was a little sweeter than the green sour one I tried.

Either way I'm not a big fan of it Lol...its a once in a lifetime for me  ;)

The june plum has the spiked seed.  Spanish lime has kind of fibrous flesh, which in that green stage, would be firmer in texture that kind of sticks to the seed.

100% definitely not spanish lime. Those are definitely a Spondias species. Most likely Spondias purpurea (Purple mombin), which has a smooth seed. Right now is also the season for it.

Yes spondias. Looks like jocote. Probably the reason you are not a big fan is that they are not at all ripe. They turn yellow/orange when ripe. Jocote has a very big seed and not much pulp, but is very delicious. A photo of the interior with seed would help to nail down the correct species.

Seeds looks too small to be jocote (Spondias purpuera). Think it's some other species of spondias.

Here the mamones are in season. They are small (1 inch)green fruit with a hard skin that contains a large seed surrounded by a sweet white/yellowish pulp, much like a pulisan or rambutan. The photos are definitely not jocotes.
