save the tree so you can topwork it and graft onto it the top 5 mangoes.

I agree, top work the tree with some good varieties. Its not that hard. Cut the main branches and let them resprout. You want to graft in the hottest months when the tree is actively growing. Use cleft graft or side veneer. Wrap (cover whole scion)with parafilm tightly. I like to put a plastic bag over the new graft and tie it to help keep in humidity, like a greenhouse. Take the bag off when the scion sprouts. Leave the parafilm on. Watch videos of Dr. Richard Campbell grafting on youtube. Good Luck!

I took the top off eventually and cut the tree to a stump about 2 feet tall.

Its started to grow back out (in a tiny bush).
Should I select a few strong shoots and cut off the rest (thin it out) or should I let the tree self select?
Also, see the picture below.  Some of the leafs are curling at the end.  What could this be and should I do anything.

Thin out some of the thinner, weaker shoots and leave several of the stronger shoots that are more evenly spaced.

There  is no sense in sorting out that tree in November. Let it put out more leaves next spring before you do any selection or thinning.

Starting its new life.

Only wish I had made a slant cut on the trunk.  I have been working to keep up with moisture on the flat top of the stump.  Hope its good enough.  Would hate to lose my grafts because of rut on the stump.

Left the growth lower on the tree for now to keep as much green on as possible.  Will take them off later after the new grafts have pushed a few times.

I will tip after every 18 inches and hope to get a good bush going.
