Most vigorous growing Mango--for shade tree
« on: June 15, 2017, 12:49:51 PM »
Someone told me they wanted to plant a mango tree just for the shade aspect, as they loved the look of a full grown mango tree.  What are recommendations for fastest growing types?  Not concerned on fruit taste, quality etc.

That was my first choice as well as I watch my VP add another 5 feet since last fall!

I was told ST Maui is just as fast as Valencia Pride, but it may be harder to find than VP.

The wilder types with small stringy fruit are most vigorous and get to be giant trees really fast. Grafted and named varieties have nowhere near the same vigour and rarely seem to get bigger than 50 or 60 feet even in the wet-dry tropics.

What's your friend going to do when a 2 lb mango falls on his head from 40 feet up?

110+ fruit trees/plants; 60+ mango trees; 9 jackfruit; 6 avocado; 3 persimmon; longan; and a dog that keeps raccoons and squirrels away.

VP is vigorous if not pruned. Another one that grows vigrously IME is Himsagar but it is prone to black sooty mold. I haven't tried the fruit yet because all the fruits fell off the tree. Wikipedia claimsit is the king of mangoes.

I have two mature Valencia Pride trees in my garden and a mature Tong bi Con tree.  I recommend Tong bi Con, it grows faster then Valencia Pride and has huge very dark green leaves that give it an almost ornamental look.
