If i scratch the durian stem a tiny bit will i kill it?
« on: June 22, 2017, 09:56:06 AM »
Hello, I have had this durian seedling for 18 days now in my garage. It started to brown from the bottom and I was afraid it was going to die, so I scratched off a tiny piece of the new bark and stopped after one scratch. Will i kill it if I scratch a tiny bit of it off?

Thanks, Matt

No it won't die. Wait for a few more days, when the seed lifts up you may have to help the  cotelydons seperate from the shoot.

Just a suggestion - you might want to cover it with a plastic bag to increase the humidity if you're under 70-75%.  Some of my durian seedlings had a hard time freeing themselves until I raised the humidity.

He doesn't want to.

Bag it or no - totally your choice.  I have far better luck with bags than without in Florida.

I believe covering in plastic has been suggested before as well.

Right, I remember now, sorry about that. How long should i wait for the durian leaves to come out? I also Plastic bag with slight holes over it, along with misting it, hope it'll help it along, I originally had 2 seedlings, but I gave the other one to a nurseryman I know personally.

Thanks, Matt

Hi Matt,

I'd suggest that you just let the plant do what it does naturally.  Assuming the temperature is right and the humidity is high enough, the plant will take care of itself.  If the seed doesn't drop naturally within 30-40 days the seedling may be stuck and you can remove it by hand.

If you do decide to bag the seedling, you might consider not misting it.  My experience is that too much moisture inside the bag can sometimes result in phytophthora outbreak.  I've lost a number of durian plants that way.

Hope that helps

Rgds,
Scott

Got it, it didnt reach below 72 on my thermometer last night, but the humidity has been averaging 40-50%, not very humid as you can tell, so i just misted lightly and then put a slightly perforated ziploc bag over it. Hope It'll break soon! I Did a crap ton of research around durian growing, and I found a few forums mentioning some people who tried to grow durian in CA. Apparently, they don't mind our lack of humidity, and 40 degree weather, but the biggest killer seems to be Phytopthora as you guys said too. I'm just gonna leave it outside in the shade once the first few leaves have hardened off.

Thanks

Problem is there arent many people successfully growing durian in California so for someone to give the advice above is kind of funny.  Then again. I hope you understand you can't believe (or even a lot of) everything you read on the internet.
