Pingan and Pedalai in South Florida, Zone 10b/11
« on: September 27, 2017, 02:11:24 PM »
Hi all,

Is anyone  in South Florida growing and fruiting A. sarawakensis and A. sericicarpus?  Can they be grown here?  Are they worth growing?  I don't have a lot of space but would like to add an Artocarpus to my collection and these 2 look very interesting.

A. sericicarpus is a giant so if you do not have lots of space, A. sarawakensis may suit better.

I know a gentleman with an A. Sericicarpus in the ground in Mia. It is not big enough to fruit yet. They are giant trees so prune early. The fruit is good, mostly just sweet but not alot of flesh surrounding the seed. IMHO there are better tasting artocarpus, jack fruit, chempedak, chempeJack, Kwai muk, possibly chama? If you could pull it off, marang  (A.odoratissimus) is delicious but seems a little more tender than pedalai.

Adolf Grimal had a large pedalai tree in Key West, but i think it never fruited. It's quite good tasting, similar to marang. But as others have said the tree gets gigantic!

Is anyone growing pingan?  I've been following several threads about size control of artocarpus but can't find any information on this one.

Keledang of good quality would be worth trying as the fruit are nice and the trees are smaller than marangs or pedalai. They also wont go so well if temps dip below about 6c.

Thanks, Mike.  I've not hear of that one before.  I'll try looking for some seeds :-)
