Guava ID?
« on: October 01, 2017, 01:34:25 AM »
hi there,

after many years, my mom's guava tree finally fruited. unfortunately she's not around anymore for me to ask her what kind of guava she had planted. So if there's any guava experts out there that can help me ID this guava, i would greatly appreciate it.

thanks!

it's white inside. here's a pic of the inside along with some of the tree itself if that helps!

Looks like my mexican white guava.  Strong smell, firm pear like semi sweet flesh? Also the first guavas to ripen here.  My wife and I both really enjoy these.  We have a vietnamese neighbor who told me the mexicans are crap and we need a vietnamese guava tree.  Will have to go over there and do a taste test soon.

I will ask them about their guavas and what all kind they have.  Grandma over there is 80 so she may not have said mexicans are "crap" but basically thats what she told us.  No no no good, you need vietnamese.   ;)  Hey we like em.  The old lady is in excellent shape and tends to their multi acre hillside garden everyday.

Have another neighbor who has about 15 guava trees.  Will have to go visit them too and get some samples to compare.  They are really nice and have a bunch of bananas and guavas and other fruits growing that are ready this time of year.

it looks a lot like the ones they sell in the local markets from Mexico
except the flesh on those is yellowish... not white.
(mexican cream types, or seedlings of i think)

i had an Asian white that was VERY nice flavor
custardy soft, sweet and aromatic.
much larger than that one though...

maybe its a hybrid ?

my feeling is, if it tastes good, who cares.
the Asian white i had got from Lowest for $2 on sale
2 yrs later it was giving me some of the best guava ive tasted.

greenman62 - thanks for the help. definitely happy that it fruited this year for like a 15ft tree (need ladders to reach the top) finally after like who knows how many years. was just curious to get an idea of what it could be just to know. but help from members here and using that info for more research is pretty educational too.

The best guava I had in my life was one growed from tailanese people at Formosa, Argentina, "frutasia": firm, very sweet, few seeds, just great. I have 5 seedlings from that amazing guava.

The favour was similar to psidium australe and psidium robustum (not guyanense, it was an ID error)

are those seedlings producing yet ?
if the fruit is as good, i would love seeds...

i have P Actangulatum, and another i *think* is guyanense ?
havent had fruit from either yet, even though the Actangulatum
is almost 6ft tall and very bushy and healthy. next year i hope...

i am also growing a few from seed out
(at least 8 different types)

i have 3 from this guy...

I tested the neighbors guavas and the ones off our tree #1 are noticeably better.  I will post a photo of the tag that came on the tree when Im home.  Will do more testing of the neighbors trees and try to locate the best guavas around.  I have 2 more trees that are almost ready to start picking.  Will post photos soon.
