Peaches growing in Hawaii?
« on: April 18, 2018, 03:40:11 PM »
Home Depot sells Long Beach Peach trees. They claim it can produce in Hawaii even though it states 200 chill hours. So I was wondering if anyone has successfully grown peaches in Hawaii? More specifically lowland Hawaii or on Oahu.

Hopefully Oscar will chime in.  I recall he had some type of peach, I think 'Red Ceylon', that was pretty good quality (but small) & would bear reliably here.  I have not seen it or its seed offered anywhere.  I will be interested to see if anyone is reporting success with any other cultivars.

I don't know that the "chill hours" thing is a reliable indicator.  There is a blackberry (Natchez, if I recall correctly) that is supposed to require about 300 hrs and people are fruiting it reliably here close to sea level -- where there are zero hours of chill time according to the definition.  That's no guarantee that something will fruit that is supposed to require more but it might be worth a try.  It also makes me wonder how long lived a plant will be if it doesn't get that dormancy it is looking for ...

Long beach is a super early type and would be a good bet.  I have a florida prince that is around the same time as long beach (peaches are ripe now here).  Florida prince would probably work there also.  It doesnt seem to need any chill here.

My florida prince has provided 30 peaches in 6 years. 28 the first and two this year.

Bummer, heres my florida prince a year ago.  I think it has more this year.  It must do well somewhere in FL.  Its the lowest chill peach you can get.  Maybe one other called desert gold both rated at 150hrs..  Followed by long beach at 200hrs.

I tried several Florida low chill types, including Floridaprince, and none did well at my elevation, 600 ft. I think that above 2000 ft. would be more likely to do well. I think the Red Ceylon peach also does better above 1000 ft. The other big problem growing peaches here, especially at lower elevation is fruit fly. They will really nail all the fruits unless you bag them.
I've pretty much given up trying to grow peaches here. I think plums, like Methley, are more likely to do well. I might try that one again.

Try Eva Pride, that is under 100 hours of chill.

I have evas pride peaches setting fruit now.  They take more chill than florida prince which is already producing ripe fruit.
