An unplanned visit to Mimosa Anaheim.
« on: April 23, 2018, 02:05:40 AM »
I was in the area for other reason, had some time to kill during the day, decided to drop by Mimosa for the first time. Pretty cool to see fruiting black sapote and sapodilla in containers, give me hope.  :D  On the other hand, I can't believe some of the asking prices :o I heard Champa Nursery in El Monte has healthier plants and better prices.

I picked up a hass (25) goji berry (12) manila mango (25) and passionfruit (28) while I was at mimosa saturday it was near my hotel. Some crazy prices but what I got wasn't too bad. I wanted a miracle fruit but 65? No thanks. Also grabbed some bubible and white strawberries at home depot. Already fruiting can't wait to try!

My folks just stopped by Champa to look for more trees to plant on their property over the weekend. They told me that Champa has very limited amount of selections now. I also asked them to look for some mangoes like chac-anon, po pyu kalay, carabao, and Maha Chanok, but there's none.

I was in the area for other reason, had some time to kill during the day, decided to drop by Mimosa for the first time. Whoa! Overpriced. Mimosa in East LA sells them cheaper.

Champa inventory comes in waves. I think their next big shipment is in July.

Also, I think the anaheim mimosa is willing to cut a deal if you offer cash, especially for some of the larger trees. Worth a try.

It's a cool nursery with a lot of space to explore, and the Vietnamese man who was working there was very nice, even though his English wasn't good. Their prices are a little high, but all their plants are large size.

They have pretty good selection of variety too. If you have lots of money to spend and want to buy a tropical fruit tree that's already very large in size, this may be the place to go.

As for the high prices, keep in mind the rent for the land space is probably very high and these nurseries are growing their plants on-site, and many of these plants are not the fastest growing, so take a lot of time investment to grow and propagate. A lot of other long-time nurseries in the region have gone out of business because the land underneath them became too valuable.

Anyway, I think the Vietnamese owner puts a lot of care into the trees.

I asked the owner if they were associated with mimosa nursery la. similar plant selection, similar layout. He said there’s no connection... but it just seems like quite a coincidence

Several years ago, I read some where that the 2 Mimosas used to be owned by the same person, but there was some discord that led to the split.

I was over at the Anaheim Mimosa last year and inquired about the price of a fairly large, old Chico sapote and he said "It's $5,500".
I had to bite a hole in my lip to stifle my laughter. Chris

I also chuckled when I looked at the $1650 Geffner atemoya, skinny trunk, 1 fruit, barely any leaves. And, the lady (wife of owner?) told me "cash only". I wanted to offer to sell her my atemoya, larger, much more developed, for only $1000. ;D

A lot of times people don't want to sell you their mother plants so they mark it up to ridiculous price so you won't be asking about buying them.

I do believe I forgot to mention during my visit last Saturday the lady who took my order and the man working out in the nursery where friendly and smiling.
Maybe it was because I was already walking around with a couple of items and she knew I was there to buy.... ;)
The man didn't appear to speak much English but was ecstatic about a 5 gallon Hass that had little flowers all over (I wish I was always as happy as that man with that little tree).
She did ask me to sign an invoice right above the line that said 'All sales final! No refunds!' so keep that in mind!

The young trees mostly appeared to be in good health, I don't think I would ever buy a larger tree from them though. They were thin, and appeared malnourished.
I wouldn't call this a go to nursery where I residing in Anaheim area, but they had what I needed at decent prices.

 Trung ,

Funny that you should mention this because my wife was just saying the other day that she thinks that I should start a small backyard nursery. I would probably offer mail order.

well, i was planning on putting up my property for $10Million because of all the tropical fruit trees i have in the backyard.  How often can you find a property that has lychee, longan, banana. cherimoya , mango,etc.. in in your backyard in Northern CA?

Sell it and move to S.FL or Hawaii so you can ditch that greenhouse and not worry about protecting anything

You got the approval from "the boss" already, what are you waiting for?  ;D Since Ethan hasn't been that active, we in the middle of CA need another local source to buy tropical plants.
