biribá? it has another smell
« on: April 24, 2018, 11:34:13 AM »
Hi,

I bouth those 6 plants from a nursery, they are from Misiones and they call them "chirimoya" but, obviously, they are not chirimoya, they should be biribá.

But when I crush their leaves, they smell so strong and nice, stronger than the biribá from Hawaii I use to grow, and the main trunk has those white bumps that I do not see in the Hawaiian biriba:

From Hawaii (no whit bumps in the bark, softer smell in crushed leaves):

These are the new ones (white bumps, stronger smell, lemony, really different! in fact, I like it more):

Very cool, I didn't know there were any cherimoyas with fragrant leaves (though I like the fruity smell of the leaves on my guanabana  :)  ).  I keep track of plant scents, so this one is going in the database.  :)

Cherimoya leaves have strong lemony smell.  The bottom photos are not cherimoya though.  Maybe atemoya?

Whoops, sorry for throwing the thread into disarray - I meant to write biribá, but I had just come from a different thread where we were discussing cherimoyas  ;)

Many Cubans call Annona reticulata "chirimoya", but the other name they also use is better:  "corazon-de-buey", "bullock's heart."

See Joaave's thread below:  Need to ID this Rollinia.  It looks similar to your plant.

I don't have a biribá (had a couple as seedlings a while back but they died, not sure why), so I'm in no position to comment about how it looks.  But I do have a reticulata, and that definitely looks like mine.  It's kind of annoying, I keep worrying that it's infested with scale, and then have to keep reminding myself, no, the bark looks like that normally.

I don't remember much of a smell in mine's leaves, though.  Guanabana leaves smell better (rather fruity).

Thanks Karen for confirming it! I really like the smell of the leaves of reticulata
