IDIOT MANGO THIEVES - SOLUTIONS WANTED
« on: June 22, 2018, 05:01:41 PM »
Once again my Carrie mango tree got thinned out this year by some moron taking the fruit 30 days too soon.  Carrie here ripens in Mid-July/Early August.  I don't mind people helping themselves to the occasional ripe fruit since I share with neighbors anyway, but what really jerks my chain is mango thieves that are too blithering stupid and steal mangoes that aren't even close to being ready & just waste the fruit.   I suspect it's my neighbors landscapers, workers, etc......since all my neighbors know all they have to do is ask.

Any suggestions on how to booby trap mango trees?  Punji stakes, Malaysian swing, Bear Trap, Claymores, ICE Agents?

You could booby trap some random fruit, just making sure that you know which ones they are.  ;)  I mean, a really evil person could literally poison them, but you could always go with something more mild, like a healthy injection of capsaicin oil  ;)

Nobody will try to taste the fruit if it doesn't ripen. A better idea is to try to zip-tie the hanging fruit to the branches where they might be hidden from view.

Put a fake camera on them and put a sign next to it that says you are on video.  Dont steel the fruit or face criminal charges.  Stealing fruit in CA especially off a farm is a big deal.  They will throw the book at you.  Maybe not for stealing fruit from someones yard but if you get caught stealing fruit from a farm you go to jail.

Talk to neighbors and have them inform their landscapers that they are being watched.  That if they do it again,  beatings will comence...
And if it’s not them,  at leaste they will think twice if tempted by the sweet looking mangos.

Put a security camera sign up and put bird netting around the tree. The signs will deter most thieves but the netting should prevent the rest. I’ve had no thefts since I put up my real high definition security cameras.

The thing is I really don't mind people helping themselves....it's the idiots I can't stand.  Had a neighbor who helped herself to what she thought were my limes.  She had the gall to tell me my limes were the worst she had ever tasted.  What she had done is pick a bunch of my green juvenile Harvey lemons.  I can understand why there aren't any "U-Pick" mango or avocado operations.  Too many idiots.

Very few I think in USA but a Filipina woman asked for some hard green ones with some yellow coloration. So she got some Carrie and Fairchild this way. I have no idea how they taste this way but she said, "Eaten with hot sauce". I always thought the best ones that Asians like to eat green are oblong SE Asian mangoes like NDM and the mango from what is sold here as a Philippine mango tree.

How about putting up a sign that says: "NOTICE - This fruit is not ripe until September/October. Don't waste your time harvesting until then."

Then in August, harvest your fruit and take down the sign.

Of course, if the idiots can't read, it would still be pointless.

There should be a Ring (video doorbell) version for fruit tree owners, and things of the like. It has a motion sensor, and anytime anything moves within the designated zone, you get an alert to your phone and can turn on the mic to speak with/yell at someone. A battery powered version should work. Not cheap, but something like that could give you a chance to at least speak up and confront/record fruit bandits. You could even yell at the squirrels and raccoons.

Motion activated sprinklers can be fun too, but difficult to set in a way to assure that no innocents are doused. When mine was set up, I was usually the one that received the wrath of the sprinkler. Amazing how many times I forgot about it and paid the price.

Are they doing this at night while you're home, or during the day while you're away?
If you're the feisty type who would run outside in the middle of the night to confront them, get a Chamberlain motion detector driveway alarm. I just got one from Home Depot for $44.
These alarms ring a chime in your house that the thieves can't hear. They don't know they've been busted until they hear the sound of a nearby pump shotgun being racked. ;)
The game trail camera is a good idea if you want video evidence. These devices are not expensive and a bonus is you can photograph nocturnal wildlife with them. Very enjoyable hobby, and you'll be surprised at the variety of critters out there in the dark on any given night.
By the way, what part of SW Florida are you in? We might be neighbors. I'm in between North Port and Englewood.

I second what Fiddler says. If you know who's doing it, you''re much more likely to be able to do something about it. Trail cameras cost about $80 and work very well.
If it makes you feel better....i heard misery loves company....i had a thief takes bout 200 pounds of durians when they were still green. Could have sold them for $5 a pound. So about $1000 wasted.  :'(  Got photos, driver's license, even the name of the guy and the police is "still working on it" after several months. So don't expect police to do much about it. At least they don't care much about ag theft here.
