Bunchosia argentea (peanut butter fruit) the real one

I find that the ripe fruit tastes like fresh peanut butter with a hint of green bean, and if you eat the fruits early, when full sized, firm and orange, they taste like a carrot with peanut butter, and the texture is crisp instead of sticky/soft (ripe fruit).

The seed is very large.

Please let me know which you prefer, ripe or early.

I like them early, but it's a challenge not to eat the seeds...I end up chewing them like a rodent,  mainly using my two front teeth.

Adam Gollner is great at prose, but not so great at getting the quotes right, in fact most of what i told him he misquoted me. I couldn't get mad at him though because that probably made the book more fun to read. But i hope no one takes anything in that book as the literal truth, or as a piece of inverstigative reporting! I think what i told him was that at plant sales i would have peanut butter fruit, blackberry jam fruit, and breadfruit plants next to each other. Then i would tell people if they bought all 3 they could make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. That was a standard joke that i used at yearly nurseryman's plant sale. Sorry ASaffron you're not the first to think of it, but i didn't want to burst your bubble.

I never tried it because i don't think i had all 3 fruits available at the same time, but i bet it would be pretty good! If you manage it i think the newspapers would love to write a story about it. Your chance at fame Adam!

But I don't want to be famous for growing PBJ sandwiches...I'd rather be famous for figuring out how to propagate jaboticabas, and make them fruit faster than everyone else.

I think making a PB puree is a good idea. But you would need a lot of fruits and would be a lot of work for probably not much end product.
Unfortunately what interests you is probably not what interests the media. You know the journalists like those snappy headlines, like Local Florida Resident Invents  Peanut Butter and Jelly Trees.

Not sure which Bunchosia it is, but the one at the Tenom Horticultural Park is fruiting well at 5 degrees latitude and 200m elevation.

I checked on Sunday.  It is B. armeniaca.

Looks like grafting is very easy for this species...all my graft are pushing out new growth.  The rootstocks are tough as nails...You can bare root them while you're grafting them!  it makes it even easier.

its in a 1 gal pot!  so it might be a few years before it's sizeable enough to plant out.

I don't think it minds the lime rock either!

In Bakersfield I have two trees over 10 years old of the (not real) peanut butter fruits. They are about 3m tall and I bought them from a vendor at the CRFG meeting in 2003 at Cal poly Pomona where I am enrolled as a student now. I do not remember who the vender was but he was out of Florida. They were one of the first truely uncommon things I have ever gotten and have survived all kinds of torments over the years including power outages in the summer in a greenhouse in Bakersfield to extremely low temps where they defoliated and then started flowering and growing from the cracks that formed in the bark, gettting way to much water, then not getting enough water and many other problems learning how to deal with plants. To me they taste much more like a soft persimmon than peanut butter, but I still think they are very enjoyable (I really like soft persimmons). They also get more slug and snail damage than any other plant I have and the slugs love eating there flowers. In the future I would like to try some of the real peanut butter fruits and get some branches to root or seeds if possible.

Sorry if this is reviving too old of a thread, but I want to know from the more experienced - I've had a hard time finding Peanutbutter fruit but am excited to grow it, so, I finally after some waiting found some seeds available on eBay from Costa Rica. Are these B. armeniaca or B. argentea?

Probably armeniaca. Unfortunately many eBay sellers post photos different from what they actually send out. Even their photos can be often swiped from other web sites. Most people have B. armeniaca and mistakenly think it's B. argentea. Seeds of B. argentea are very difficult to get. Seeds of B. armeniaca are not so difficult to get.

Looks good Mike...mine did the same thing a while back, but they dried up before they could push out...they never really got much further than the stage that your picture shows.

I have since pruned my grafted tree pretty heavily...mainly because the scion is considerably thicker than the rootstock...im afraid to let it get too top heavy, and possibly snap.

I'm really eager to taste one of these....I hope they're better than b armeniaca...and that they perform well in FL

I ordered seeds of B. Argentea from tradewinds a while back, they are barely pushing out of their seedcoats, so I cannot confirm identity by leaf shape. I hope it is the “real one,” Matthew Krebs, the owner, said the fruit they came from was a different shape from B. Armeniaca, I believe he said it was “shorter and squatter” but I cannot remember. Forgive me for the ignorant question, but how long does this species take to fruit, or is it similar to B. Armeniaca?

the picture on their website shows the wrong species.. I bet u have armeniaca...were the seeds football shaped?  I believe armeniaca has elliptical shaped seeds, and argentea has rounder seeds.
