"Effin'" deer are eating my trees
« on: March 20, 2013, 09:24:22 PM »
Deer Suck!

Notice the ends of some of the branches...

This Lula just pushed out a ton of new growth. The tree is half as full as it was about a week ago. I put the fence up after the fact.

The Oro Negro was full of panicles and just starting to flush.

They live in Jonathan Dickenson State Park. Roll the dice and take your chances on that one.

This is my Maha Chanok that was in the midst of a fantastic growth spurt. I'm pissed!

They also ate some of the flowers and/or new growth on my Dot, Pickering, Gary, Neelam, and a fruit on my BKM. Now, $400 later, the yard is filled with garden fencing and it looks like hell.  I hate these F'n deer!

I suggest trying to turn this situation into your own advantage. You probably will have to leave those structures up permanently? Why not use them for wind and cold protection as well. I would put some shade cloth material to protect from wind. Make it so the tops can be easily closed for cold protection when necessary.

I looked into that option. FWC can issue a gun and light permit, but when it comes to deer they want you to scare them.  In order to get a depradary deer permit it sounds like I need to exhaust all other options first, electric fence, gun and light harassment, etc.

Killing animals such as deer, pigs, rabbits, etc.  is not a long term solution in any case. Unless you are willing to station a 24 hour hunter in your yard. By the time you kill one 20 others have reproduced in the wild. Fencing is really the only permanent solution.

Kill one and hang it on a half acre property and the word gets out.  Large farm/orchard different story.

I've seen these deer easily jump a 5 foot fence. That's how they get into the yard.

.223 cal ammunition comes in 20 round boxes; coincidence?

I know deer can jump, but special deer fencing does exist. I was told same thing by hunters here for my pig problem...kill one and it will scare the others away. The very next day a herd of pigs was feeding on the dead pig carcass! Even if it does scare deer who wants the stench of rotting carcass around your house every day? :o :o :o
