Mango cultivar with the largest leaves?
« on: March 26, 2013, 11:05:40 AM »
I remember seeing a mango cv, that had the hugest leaves ever. (almost 2ft)...it was supposed to be from Israel...the name was something like z-48 (I can't really remember, but I think it was Z something)

I'm wondering which cultivars you know of that have huge leaves?

I think Bombay, had big leaves as well.

Tong Bi Cong has huge green leaves that are also very dark. It almost looks like an ornamental type plant.

I was looking at a Pineapple Pleasure leaf last night that was about a foot and a half long and three inches wide.  I think the leaves can sometimes distort size to pick up more sunlight?  I have noticed larger leaves on pickering and NDM a few times too..

yes...pickering likes to make huge leaves sometimes!  Seems to be related to vegetative and reproductive growth cycles?  After it flowers, the leaves get smaller?

Of my trees the Alphonso has by far the biggest leaves - the longest measured at elbow-index finger. It's a beautiful tree.

I think a lot has to do with the exposure to the sun.  I have seen very large leaves on NDM and even lemon zest.  I have also noticed odd super sized leaves on select branches of various cultivars when portions of the tree are "starved" from direct sun.

Most of the time this is true...but in certain cases, I've seen plants in the full sun making huge leaves...like pickering, and the cultivar from Israel (can't recall the name).

No...the owner of the tree  had a crazy story about the cultivar...like it was a big deal...he tried to sell me scions...but at the time I couldn't graft.
