Two seasons ago, my parents young longan was completely stripped of it fruit by something.  Last year, they ended up picking they’re fruit a little early so, somewhat less sweet that it could have been.  This year they asked me to build something to protect the fruit.  Here is the tree as it looks now.

It’s doable now but it will probably outgrow it by next year.  Any suggestions to protect from critters or is it just do what I can for now and eventually the tree will grow big enough for everyone and everything?

The bark on this longan is cracking.  It's at my parents house in Whittier, CA (So. Cal, LA area).  It's also blooming.  I suspect it's a last ditch effort to  propagate and will soon die afterwards.

It's a tree from Memosa that we planted for them about 2 years ago.

Any thoughts?  Over watered?  I suspect my parents water it everyday.

As an aside, the longan I have in Oklahoma is thriving even after the horses ate down to the ground.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Budwood for trade or postage
« on: August 28, 2017, 08:48:52 PM »
I have some left over budwood.  I am looking for Bearss Lime or anything interesting.  I really on have limited amount of branches to graft right now.

I have 3 variegated pink lemon, 2 pixie and 1 moro.  These are already wrapped in parafilm.  I can cut some Sanguinelli if anybody is interested in it.

I will only ship to non quarantined, non citrus growing areas.

My intent is to plant this Manila at my parents house.   I just got it from Lowes for $25 and will graft some variety on it.  I will be here only through the weekend and in fact I'm leaving today and will be back on Friday.  I need advise on planting here.  It's completely clay soil.  Should I amend the soil?  Plant it on a mound?  They will have a sprinkler watering it daily.  I know it's not ideal but that's what we have to work with.

Second question is, should I graft it this year?  My concern is really my parents who are getting up in age (low 80's).  I'd like to get them some fruit while they are still here.

Just grafted 88-2 and Shiranui on to the above.  I'm looking for mango, specifically lemon zest or sweet tart if any is available.  Otherwise, I'll just give them away.  Free if they fit in a business envelope and one stamp otherwise a mailer and postage.  Obviously, only to non quarantine areas.

This Xie Shan I got last year from Harris and is growing vigorously.  It has not fruited and no flowers this year so far.    The blood orange just flowered this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are your lychees blooming?
« on: February 24, 2017, 07:15:27 PM »
Just wonder where everybodies lychees are now from east coast to west coast and everywhere in between.  My lychees are blooming for the first time in the GH.  According to lycheesonline.com they generally bloom in Dec-Jan.  It's been an unusually warm winter but in the GH it's 80-90 degrees in the day time and 50 at night.  Mine are just starting to push their spikes.

Is it time yet?  Looks like my seedlings from last year are starting to push new growth.

Thanks,

Citrus General Discussion / Orange Frost ready to be picked?
« on: August 25, 2016, 12:18:22 PM »
This orange frost was purchased this late spring.  It had the three fruits on it.  It was put into the ground next to the GH.  The fruits are starting to turn orange.  There has been growth of this tree at all.  On the other hand an artic frost that has purchased at the same time also in the ground has grown to about double it size.

Are these satsumas ready to be picked?  Should I have discarded the fruit early on to put more energy into the plant?  Given a choice, should I have even got this plant with the fruit on it or should I have taken another without fruit?  Thanks, Van

Just sent a package to my parents in CA and noted the above.  Sent Mon. to be delivered on Thurs.  I checked this last weekend and it was to be Sat. delivered on Tues ( 2 business days).  I guess it changed as of 8/1.  Just to let you know.  It may be more critical when sending live material.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What are these (types of mangos)
« on: July 08, 2016, 12:42:31 AM »
Got this box of mangos from Alex today, but it doesn't say what they are.  I sure Alex is busy packing and shipping and selling.  I think most are Edwards, but what is the big green one and when do you eat it?  I had one today and it had incredible sweet flavor. Van

I know this is a fruit forum, but you guys are so great I thought you could help out.  Maybe you have some in your yard or a neighbors yard.  I've be grafting citrus and avocado, soon mangoes and hopefully lychee.  I saw this picture of a bougainvillea with four colors and I said to myself, I think I can do that.  I already have red and purple at home.  I got orange visiting my parents in CA.  Now I only need white.  Or if you have any other interesting color I'd consider it as well.  Thanks,  Van

Cold Hardy Citrus / How about a satsuma in zone 7 on a south wall?
« on: April 18, 2016, 11:48:18 AM »
I posted this question regarding an avocado in the Tropical fruit section.  Basically the answer was you never know until you try.  So if I'm going to try an avocado, I should be able to do a satsuma as well (maybe even better).

The current plan is to plant them on the south wall of the green house.  I will put a clear pool cover over the green house in the winter which will extend over the outside trees at least for a few years to get them established.

I'd like to get Xie Shan.  Anybody know a source for this or will I have to graft it?

Any thoughts?

Based on recent discussion here, I want to try grafting longan.  I have limited space in GH, so a cocktail tree would make most sense if possible.  So if somebody is willing to send me a pencil size piece, I'd really appreciate it.  DR is giving vegetative growth now, so I figure now as good a time as any.
Thanks, Van.

Citrus General Discussion / How to get the trunk thicker
« on: April 11, 2016, 09:04:40 AM »
I bought these trifoliate a couple of months ago on eBay.  They seem to be doing well but no new growth yet.
How do I get the trunk thicker in preparation for grafting?  How long will it take before graft able?
Thanks. Van

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Is this a seedling or a sucker?
« on: March 22, 2016, 08:24:49 PM »
I looking a peach blossoms last week and I noticed this.  Sorry for the bad pic but I refuse to get a smarter phone when my blackberry gets the job done.  I planted some type of peach maybe 5-10 years ago and I thought it died.  It was some type of yellow skinned small peach(no red at all).  It ripen about the end of June.  I  piled up a bunch of farm implements over here and it got overgrown.  It bloomed and now has fruit on it.  The original tree also bloomed but not as vigorously. The original, I think, is the curvy one.   I thought it was interesting.  Any thoughts?

Down here in NOLA.  They have these avo at HD.  Thinking about get 2-3 and trying one outside the other one in the GH.  I'll graft the varieties on to each tree.  How do these taste?  Any thoughts.   I can make a makeshift GH around the outside one for a few years.

Citrus General Discussion / Parafilm tape question
« on: December 27, 2015, 04:51:02 PM »
I just finished bark grafting several citrus (2 pumelos and a mandarin) onto a grapefruit which my parents grew from seed (15 years old- no fruit).  I'm only on vacation in CA and will be leaving tomorrow.  I wrapped the grafts and trunk with parafilm tape.  Will my parents have to remove the tape or will the  buds break through the tape.  I've never used tape before.  My experience is with pecan and I've brushed wax on it and the buds have just broken through.  My parent have no grafting or really any pruning experience.  Thanks in advanced.  Van
