Title: Cooking/Smoking with Tropical Fruit Woods?
Post by: BonsaiBeast on July 06, 2020, 08:44:10 PM
Now that I have my yard filled with establishing mangos, peaches, citrus, sapotes, loquats, avocados, and other trees that will need trimming soon, it got me thinking: do any of these woods work well for smoking/barbecuing?

It would seem like these widely-ranging flavored fruits might produce widely-ranging flavored smoke. Does anyone have experience trying this out? I had a batch of jerk chicken I was going to try grilling up over an open charcoal flame, but it got me thinking about the possible tropical woods that might accompany this tropical dish.

Peach wood is great for smoking. I have heard of people using citrus and avocado as well.

However, I would be hesitant to use mango wood because of the sap.

I use guava wood on BBQ quite a bit and other fruit woods for sure too they have a sweet light smoke flavor!
I've used guava, deciduous fruit tree wood cherry, prunus all, macadamia and non fruiting wood mostly maple and liquid amber has a very nice smoke profile for my annual smoked turkey at Thanksgiving time!
