Amazing Annona fruits from JF
« on: November 16, 2015, 08:24:31 PM »
I was lucky enough to have a friend hand deliver me some fruits from JF (Frank) in Ca.  (his fruit is only available for local pick up)

i must say these were some of the finest fruits I've ever tasted.

Frank must be in one of the best areas for growing cherimoya/atemoya in the world! The fruits looked like pieces of artwork!

I shared them with my friends and they all were eagerly devoured.

the Birula (pink fruit) was my favorite, it reminded me much of the lisa fruits that i have grown (which are also one of my favorites)

the Campas (the smooth skinned cherimoya) was excellent...it didn't have the flaky pulp texture that I associate with Lisa, or sugar apples...it was very smooth...the flavor hard to describe...but i got hints of banana, and guanabana, with a very sweet flavor...the seed count was very low (compared to the atemoyas and sugar apples I'm used to eating)

the Calostro (slightly bumpy, green atemoya) reminded me of PPC and Dream somewhat...definitely a topnotch fruit...I was overwhelmed by all these high quality annona fruits.

this annona tasting event made my year!  (my crop this season was poor...and I love annonas the most out of all the fruits I grow)

thanks to JF for providing some of the most delicious food items on the planet!

It was my pleasure to share these anonnas with you. Birula preforms well in fall & spring in our cold wet winter it is washed out. Calostro is a workhorse it is excellent from start to finish and it sets much more fruits. The brix for these 4 anonnas were Birula 21 Calostro 24 Campas 26 Helmut31. Adam and TreeNmore will be propagating these two atemoyas for the Florida folks I do not ship trees.

I wonder how castrolo will perform in FL, it could be a real winner...(also would like to compare birula to Lisa, in terms of vigor in FL growing conditions )

I better get my act together...I have been slacking on the annona grafting

I need to get my rootstocks in order...

So far it looks like I will be grafting sugar Apple and illama mostly

I want to do some atemoya and reticulata too..(but need more rootstock )

Also need to do a batch of rollinia, and other rare stuff like salzmannii

Nice fruit Adam and JF! Birula is my favorite Atemoya, it had a great acidity to it and just the right amount of sweetness.

These should work well in Florida and there is a chance these were cross with cherimoya pollen these seedling outperform all the other named atemoyas I have tried. Thanks Simon, I've harvest over 50 maybe in March I'll have more.

Hey Andrew

I got about 15 pinks spreed in 3 trees. Here are some pix one on the same branch as birulas. Dozens of Calostros all over.  People forget Calostro is the number one atemoya in our tastings beating out many good cherimoyas.....

Here is a Booth I just ate straight up pineapple & coconut incredibly delicious!!

Another outstanding cherimoya
Cherisop, creamy, seeds surrounded by chewy flesh unique flavor very sweet perhaps atemoya crossback to cherimoya might work in FL

and a late LZ register 26 brix!

Jeff
Big Red was tiny about the size of a tennis ball

low seed count
some grid
brix 15

I'm going to hand pollinate next year and let it hold more fruits.

Yah, a california backyard grown cherimoya is one of the best fruits on the planet. The quality can vary slight from year to year (from Excellent to Off-the-charts). On an off-the-charts year, eating a backyard cherimoya has similar effects on the brain as a narcotic -- both in terms of the flavor high and the withdrawals when one realizes that the cherimoya supply has disappeared. (And, if you're lucky enough to find a cherimoya 'dealer,' the habit is also nearly as expensive as narcotics :-).

Coastal southern california probably has the world's best climate for growing fruit. One can grow the best of the temperate fruits right alongside the finest subtropicals. The only drawbacks to socal are: a) the super high cost of living (which can really be an issue for fruit growers, since the hobby requires an expensive asset -- land!), and b) lack of rain.
Jeff  :-)

This morning Behl and I shared our last cherisop cherimoya at Starbucks. I must say I was never a big fan of chewy anonnas until I tried my Calostro but cherisop adds the chewy texture of sugar apple and atemoyas with the complex flavor of cherimoya. This is the chewiest cherimoya I've ever had, a chewy texture down to the skin that doesn't clinch to the seeds. The brix is outstanding 24, with absolutely no after taste. So if you don't like those sickeningly sweet creamy cherimoya this is a must for your collection.....

Hi JF, like I said before.. I can buy some trees if you can ship them. Thanks. I know it's close by, but it's better than getting plants from Florida like I usually do.

Frank, is this cherisop a cherimoya or a cherimoya x soursop? From the name, I thought it was the latter.

Atemoya x Cherimoya

I don't know why Angel calls it cherisop

Birula brix 23 LZ 22 I didn't think it could happen.

Birula was a good sport and gave it the old college try but once a cherimoya finds its groove no anona can touch it!...as a matter of fact, it has no rivals.

I ordered a box of fruits from Frank and got to same two last night.

First up was the Calostro. This is the first atemoya I have ever eaten, and it was delicious! Right up there with some cherimoyas, the flesh was a little more chewy or firm but the taste was great.

Next I had a Birula. When I cut this open there was a noticeable pink tinge in the flesh. The flesh was a little more chewy than Calostro but was not objectionable. The taste was amazing, with a lot of different flavor profiles. My family (brother, wife, and Mother) all enjoyed this one slightly more.

Tonight the cherimoyas in the box should be ready to go head to head with the atemoyas and it is going to be a close fight.

Eric
