The most expensive and sought after village sugar in the markets is the New Guinea striped sugarcane. It may be its appearance as much as its high quality that interests people.

By high quality, you mean easy to eat?

Future yes not too hard and fibrous and has high sugar content.Ease of extracting juice and flavor are other aspects of 'quality'.

My babies are up and growing!

This started our dark purple but now I see her in her full beauty.  Thick.  Tasty.  Soft.  What can beat this?

That New Guinea black striped sugar cane sure looks great, the mentioned quality is great too. I wish I could get something like that where I'm at, it sure looks tasty.

totally agree...that new guinea cane looks outstanding...I'd love to get one.

I just planted some black cane cuttings.  I should have some cuttings to share by spring...maybe sooner.

I've had a problems with cuttings ending up growing to be much shorter and thinner than the original. About 90% of the time. Anyone has similair experiences? Could it be nutritional? They get about 6-8 hrs of sun.

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

How are the pest/disease problems with sugar cane?

Does the sugar attracted bunches of baddies?

Mine seem to get alot of mealy bugs on the cane where it is covered by the base of the leaf stalks (probably a good technical term for that part of the leaf).
Other than them, have only seen grasshoppers and some leaf-roller type of caterpillars on it.

Hey DM,
The sugarcane I got from you is doing really well.  I haven't seen anything attacking the canes yet.  They're nice and fat but not growing nearly as tall as I remembered it when my parents grew them many years ago.

Here's two kind that my parents grow

The first 3 picture is of the black sugarcane at their farm

This one is what my parent calls blood sugarcane. It's a more ornamental looking variety, same cane/stalk color, but the leaves are purplish, instead of green like the first 3 picture of the black sugarcane above. Though is just as sweet, but the canes are a bit shorter, than the black ones above.
Anybody might know what this purplish leaves one, might be called?

Very nice canes, mine aren't as thick as yours though.

Mine grew best when i mulch heavy and added compost and dirt burying  the canes like 10 in or so and watered it a lot they add a lot of roots in the mounds

they like fertile soil and water
