Dream Atemoya or Dream Cherimoya? Which is it?

I am looking to buy a plant and found only two sources for it. One being Flying Fox where it is listed as an atemoya (currently sold out) and the other being Wayne Clifton (recommended to me by a couple of posters here). I emailed him to inquire about availability and got a message back saying he does not know what a 'Dream atemoya' is, he propagates 'Dream cherimoya'.

The posts I have read here refer to it as a Dream atemoya. But, it feels like I insulted Mr Clifton by calling it an atemoya which was certainly not my intention. So, atemoya or cherimoya, which is it?

P.S. - I am not pointing fingers and do not want to start an argument. Just trying to figure out the confusion in the names.

Same genetics. Don't call it an atemoya when dealing with Wayne. Excellent fruit. It is the best annona I have tasted in Florida but I certainly haven't tried them all.

I must have e-mailed him the same time you have and i got the answer. The Flying Fox probably sells it but he is hard to reach also.Come spring we might be able to buy one.Maybe me may buy one on lay-way.

Luak - glad I am not the only one that made that mistake :-)! I am guessing Wayne is probably really irritated with emails he gets inquiring about the 'Dream atemoya'.

Same genetics,  you mean both annonas?  Other than that, an atemoya and cherimoya are not the same.

i tried to sell as cherimoya, then got bunch of resistance from the buyers, who didn't agree it was pure cherimoya...so I called in an atemoya to be safe...but then that pissed Wayne off...lol...I can't win...

I just said to hell with it, and started calling it an Annona...ain't nobody got time for that....

I got my Arka graft to take so hopefully next year I will be able to put these against each other. I know Wayne's came from a seedling. I think he has had it for about 20 years.

Different species for the same stick of budwood. I know the controversy.

I am guessing Wayne will sell to you guys. Just ask for the Dream Cherimoya.

If for some reason he doesn't, a lot of people have it now and it is out there. I wasn't going to graft any to sell just because he is my buddy and I have over purchased, over planted and have way too much to do in too small of an area anyway.

It is a top-notch fruit for us here in FL.

Wayne insists it is a cherimoya, and swears it came from a cherimoya seed. You know what else came from a cherimoya seed? Damn near every other atemoya known to man; the seed parent is only half the story.

IF the Dream is a cherimoya, it has some awfully pointy leaves relative to just about all other cherimoya out there.

That said, it is closer to a cherimoya in terms of taste than any other atemoya I've had, and it grows and fruits well here in FL. Totally worth growing IMHO, and definitely better than Gefner.

I'll be grafting a dozen or two Dream in the spring, and plan on having them available for sale as soon as they're healed up.

I'm planning on ordering some Arka Sahan wood from you when you're doing your scion sale, and am really looking forward to comparing the fruit side by side. Besides fruit pics, which I will agree look fairly similar, do you have any other evidence Dream is the same as Arka Sahan?

Last year I sent 2 emails to Wayne asking about the Dream atemoya for purchase and never got a response. Now
I finally understand why. Oh well I bought one from The Dom and have a wonderful plant and I didn't have to drive
almost 2 hours to Bradenton. I would love to get another one Dom whenever you have one available!

If you want one from Wayne you call it what he calls it .

If you want a California type you are calling the wrong guy.

Some of us believe dream's mother tree is a grafted tree the evidence is compelling.....look around and see for yourself. I'll have more pix of Arka Sahan in spring

Just to share a photo of dream and an observation. I have all cherimoyas and atemoyas in greenhouse. They all have new developing fruits on or flowers. I have got -3C  inside of gh. I noticed that all fruits of cherimoyas  are ok but fruits of dream  got effected badly,now they r black... Though leaves are ok.. other atemoyas lost leaves too.

John as I recall you had an issue with dream it probably was on the wrong rootstock have some one graft Arka sahan on cherimoya first or atemoya rootstock not on the cheap pond apple
