Melicoccus bijugatus (Spanish Lime)
« on: July 19, 2019, 12:39:47 AM »
Hi everyone,

I’m planning on growing a few Spanish Lime trees from seeds and wanted to know how to properly determine the sex of the young tree? If this isn’t possible, does anyone have a fruiting hermaphrodite tree in south Florida of a good known sweet variety? I’m willing to purchase scions. Thanks for your assistance!

They’re slow growers.  You won’t be able to determine sex until they flower.  Excalibur offers a grafted Spanish lime.  Grafted varieties aren’t always hermaphrodite, better check on that.

I believe that Lara Farms Nursery has grafted self-fertile trees.

Excalibur in Lake Worth has a few different grafted Spanish lime cultivars. They should have Sasa from PR and a few others.

It's practically impossible to tell the sex of a Spanish lime seedling. You would need to wait until it flowers which would be years.
