What grows without full sun...
« on: May 05, 2017, 10:34:43 AM »
So at the recommendation of several members here I will be making a trip to Excalibur on Monday to buy a wurtz avocado and possibly a mango. In my yard I have space for a couple extra small trees however they are areas that will be shaded for several hours of the day and will not be in the sun the first 4-5 hours of daytime. Are there any fruit trees that do well in this environment? Will mangos still be ok without full sun? Guava maybe? Must be a small tree or one I can keep small. Thanks!

Jackfruit
Most garcinia species?
Carambola
Banana?
Salak
Miracle fruit
Monstera deliciosa
Vanilla

Probably get slower growth than full sun and maybe not as much production from certain species but better than an empty spot in the yard.

Half of my growing space is shaded by neighbor's 2 story house  :(
I currently have mulberry and loquat there, will plant guava and fig too. Mulberry does require lots of pruning!
Looking for scionwoods: loquat, cherimoya, jujube, chocolate perssimon

Thanks for the suggestions!  It is frustrating only having a small space to work with but I'm trying to optimize what I have.  If I could get a mango to grow with 6-8 hours of sunlight that's what I would do.

My tropical guavas that I have in the shade are a fraction of the size of the ones in full sun. My 2 pineapple guavas are both in the shade and they seem to love it!

Surinam cherry does well with part sun and I suspect other eugenias will as well. Guava and mango, on the other hand, are some of the most sun-critical trees, needing as much sun as they can get for optimal fruit quality. Wax jambu and carambola are good part-shade plants.
