You picked it at the right time-- always pick ilamas AFTER they split.

It will be soft ripe, ready to eat, 1-3 days later, at room temperature.

Thanks for the info, I couldn't wait so i ate half already and it was absolutely delicious, so creamy and fruity ;D

I put the other half in a container, i'll pick at it the next couple days to taste each stage of ripening.

Very nice white flesh Ilama you have! So neat to see some white ones showing up now. You mentioned it was creamy and fruity tasting. Any other attributes can think of? Any other fruit it resembles in taste? I hope mine will be that good!

Yea i was surprised it was a white flesh, I was almost certain it was a red, But it has sort of a watermelon floral smell and taste like fruity dankness, I can't quite reference a taste, it taste like ilama. I might be able to describe it better when fully ripe

Im eating some now and i would describe the taste as like a melon(more towards watermelon), banana, floral(like eating the smell of flowers) custard, with little hints of dankness. Soo Good, Im going to make a forest of these trees  8)

Congrats on being one of the few folks growing and fruiting this species here in FL. I hope to join that club in the next year or two once my Genova Red is big enough.

That is quite the taste description, thank you! You have me sold on a white Ilama. Can't wait to see your Ilama orchard! It's a shame more of the varieties of Ilama are not grown much. It sounds like there is enough variation in taste in the fruit that maybe three or so varieties wouldn't be enough to capture what other varieties could provide. I am assuming that Pajapita, Guillermo, Genova Red, Fairchild, Nilito, etc. don't all taste the same?

Its the first fruit plus its in a 45G pot and the tree is only 4 years old, I know they get much bigger when established and matured. This fruit was as big as a soft ball maybe slightly bigger so not bad for first fruit.

Don't be afraid to put fertilizer, with plenty of Nitrogen, around your ilama trees.   Ilama trees do well with raw chicken manure.

Alright good to hear, im always really cautious when it comes to fertilizing my rare trees, i mainly spray compost tea on it or use low fertilizers like bio live. I just got a huge bag of rabbit manure so i'll throw some on the ilama. I can't wait to plant it in the ground but the soil isn't ready yet where i will plant it, but it will have plenty of everything, The soil is already full of worms.
