Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon fruit support structure/safety question
« on: February 12, 2018, 09:33:48 PM »
Is is ok ( safe ) to built dragon fruit trellis's using treated marine dock posts?  I.e. Can or do any of the chemicals used to treat the pilons get into the fruit through the roots attached to the pole?

I know it is treated way more heavily than regular treated lumber ......

Thanks

Agreed on Glenn ....... I have had one at the house for 8 years and love it.  I am planting 5 of them and 4 mah ha chinok

I will try and find Edgar thanks for that suggestion

I'm going to get these 50 in the ground and then go and try and find more trees ...... hopefully there will be some stock to choose from

53
Thanks ...... I had Honey Kiss on my list but I have not found any decent size trees to buy yet.  I have been to zills, nelsons and fruitscapes and called pine island so far

54
I forgot to add ......... thanks for the tip on Duncan I have 2 of them tagged but I may get more based on your recommendation

Thanks again

55
Well played sir ...... but I won't even be a tiny blip on the radar up here in Merritt island.  I will have fun though and should be good for a few laughs along the way

Mango guru's I need your advice please ....... I am planting a small grove ( hobby farmish but would like to sell the fruit someday from a stand ).

I made the rounds last week and picked out about 50 trees to be delivered in a couple weeks after the fear of a late freeze is gone

Some of my choices were made on the spot based on availability or lack there of and some by the people at the nurseries that were helping me and answering my questions.

I got about 20 varieties FYI but my first two questions are .......

I read in another post today that Lemon zest is very disease prone ....... I did tag 4 of these as the person helping me said that the fruit sells very well.  Should I rethink buying the 4 trees and maybe only buy 1 or 2?

My second question is about keitt ...... everything I see and read makes this tree sound like a very good meat and potatoes producer ......... I read they are disease prone when young but that they are bullet proof and supply well in late season.  I had planned on getting 5 of them but both nurseries said that they would not recommend them at all and kinda talked me out of them?

When I'm done setting up the farm I will have about 100 trees maybe more if I plant the whole property ....... should Keitt be included for what I'm trying to do?

Thanks for your help and get ready ....... I will have more questions I am sure .......

What brand is that shiny one in the picture?  How much are those?  ........ and lastly does anyone know proper spacing from heater to heater to protect a grove?

Thanks

60
Great thank you

61
I'm going to have to think about this one for a while.  I am big and strong ...... but fat and lazy ...... very lazy

62
I'm still mad I killed the one I had!!  Is there any source in fl to buy a couple trees?

63
Soooooo for 80 to 100 mango trees the attached picture is the way to go?

Is there a similar/equivilant that can be mounted or pulled behind a golf cart?

Thanks ...... that's what I was trying to figure out.  I.E. What. Screen size keeps the bad pests out and what other precautions are needed like doors and such

Has anyone ever seen any info on that?

Can anyone point me in the right direction or put me in contact with someone that is growing dooryard citrus in Florida to protect from greening?

I am planting a new grove of mango and lychee and have decided to not plant the 50 citrus trees that I had planned on ...... I just think it will be to discouraging.

I really would like to have 10 or 12 trees just for juice and have heard that it can be done in a way to prevent the disease

Thanks for your help

Well I have some interesting ( in my opinion ) experience on this topic that I hope helps.  I have a lychee tree that has been plagued with the srilanken weevils for years now and the tree always looked horrible from them.  I tried spray and soaps and tanglefoot and sqished hundreds of them.  I did not drench FYI so that may work FYI.

I noticed one day about 3 years ago a pair of English sparrows going crazy fling around the tree ..... they were there every day for a few weeks and they were eating the weevils one after another.  The next flush of new growth produced full perfect leaves with no damage ...... first ever.  Those sparrows or other sparrows .... not sure come back from time to time and do the same thing

Sooo my question or suggestion is ..... has anyone ever put a small bird feeder in or near their tree?  If the birds frequent the area they may take notice of the weevils and deal with the problem for you?

67
My lychee has lived with them now for years ...... they are just a part of life now.  I've tried everything including gooey sticky stuff around the trunk n limbs.

I will say this ...... there is a small bird ( maybe a sparrow ) that has taken note and it rips through the tree and eats 20 or 30 in 2 minutes. I actually think it keeps my population in check.

I have thought about putting a bird feeder underneath the tree in hopes more birds would learn the weevils are there and start hunting them

68
I like the top work idea because lancentilla is a very healthy grower ....... but if your not into that it is a disappointing, messy, weird tasting, uneven ripening, splitting, yard space hog ....... that once in a rare while will produce an enormous Jurassic sized mango that will impress everyone that see's it!!!!

My lychee did not bloom either ........ you tube squirrel launcher and then please post video's of your squirrels as they fly into your least favorite neighbors yard.

What makes me mad is they just eat 20% of a mango and then go get another one ...... if they ate the whole thing I might not mind that much

soooooooo ......... is it a mutt or is it an exciting new hybrid that the home owner will get to name and sell cuttings from?

71
You guys got me thinking ..... I know my trees were planted after the hurricanes because I lost all my trees in the storms ....... the Glenn might actually be 10 years old and started as a 15 gallon.  I cut it back hard though.

After the fruit sets I delimb everything except the branches that have fruit ( it shows off the fruit and gets a lot of comments ) and then after the fruit is picked I cut those limbs and shape the tree..

All of the varieties I mentioned respond well with that same hard pruning/cut back as did lancetiila and Maliika when I had them.

All that being said a tree that is happy staying small and doesn't need to be pruned as much would be easier for sure ...... just try the fruit first to make sure you like it! ....... this forrumm proves one mans trash mango can be another's favorite ......

Also as others have mentioned if you get two try and get varieties that ripen and different times to extend your harvest ........ those small trees will produce way more fruit than you may think and when they all come in at once it can be a project

72
I live in brevard ..... on the island 10a ...... I have kept Glenn, cogshall, rosigold, and nam doc at those heights for 8 years or so now.  They are prolly 10 feet or so now ...... you can cut them back very very hard and they will bounce right back time after time.

The best fruiting, happiest, most hardy one is the Glenn

Just cut them back over and over to the size you want ........

Well .......... I just sliced up 3 of them and I stand corrected I see what you all are talking about now so mine are not exempt! Or you jinxed me but down at the tip of the bottom of the fruit they were a little darker and softer ......

Oh well ...... Delicious though

I am in Merritt island Florida btw

I am very confused by all of the cogshall comments?  Mine produces very heavily every year and I ripen them all on the tree and have no issues with the centers being soft? I wonder why?

After growing many varieties I kept only the Glenn and cogshall because they are bullet proof and produce so well

And a rosi gold because it's early .........

Hundreds of mangos on 10 ft trees ....... Very happy with them

How do you know that it is actually greening?  Many ailments look similar ( at least to me ) how do you confirm a tree has the disease and will it spread to the other citrus trees in the yard? I.E. Should an infected tree be removed to protect the others?  Thanks
