Was 102 and 1% humidity here yesterday.  My mangos still look ok.  Edward is fruiting.  But the tree is drooping.  Ill top work this tree at some point with something that grows better.  Not impressed with Edward's growth habit here.

We will do it in the morning so its not crazy hot.  Alcohol is fine if you want to drink its ok with me.  I will make sugarcane juice and make margaritas.  We can make it with or without booze for everyone.

I got a couple nice banana racks coming in soon too.

I have a couple stand out trees here.  Winters 20222 mango, grafted taralay, and J12 seedling.  These ones are growing really well.  Sweet tart also does well but then gets droopy when it flowers.

I have other varieties, if you have ones you want let me know.  The nabal look good for grafting now if you live in the coastal area.

Brad, Sak Ip is suppose to be the best, I have one grafted Sak Ip (1-1/2yrs old) which has flowers/fruits now. I should be able to compare the taste of the fruit with my Kohala this year.

yeah I want to switch variety on a kohala.

the diamond river tree I have grows really well and fruit is good too.

i bought 1 of each type for myself and rob in florida got 8 trees which I agreed to try and revive for him.  Of those 12 plants 2 biqi look good, the other 2 biqi may make it.  And the rest I think are dead.  The An Hai looked like they might pull though but they apear to be dead grafts now.  So 15-20% success rate.  Not very good really but at least theres some survivors here.  Im sending one to Rob soon.  Waiting for the insane heatwave to pass.  its supposed to be 125 in the desert here on Monday.

I have some seeds in FL, but I thought you guys got plant stuff confiscated through the post office

Definitely not the case.

Oscar what kind of fertilizers are best for watermelon?

1593
i dont get PM on the watermwlons but theres some other wilt that can hit them and they just die right away if it happens.  Thats why you need to move them around each year.

sorry it doesnt help you with PM.  Usually less water on stuff helps reduce PM.  my place it super dry during summer so no mildew.

this tree likes to make tons of buds.  I think if you get to the point that your tree is making a lot of buds on the branches, they should be thinned down to 2 or 3 on each main branch so the energy is directed to just a few buds.

1595
these 2 seem alive!  several look dead as well...

i put in some new avocado trees last year and top worked them this spring.  Then popped water melon plants nearby to leverage the irrigation while the trees are small.  It works well and the melons can be rotated around the orchard this way so the fungus from prior melon grows doesnt infect the new plants.  Ive got about 20 of these like this on 18ft spacing.  The hillside will be full of melons soon!

thanks Oscar.  Im growing a bunch of orangeglos and planted a few moon and stars for the first time this year.  Orangeglo is the king.

I've yet to eat a really good seedless watermelon. Although i have to say that most of the seeded ones, though better, are not top of the line either. But i'm kind of a watermelon snob because i used to grow watermelons commercially. Unfortunately the watermelons that have taken over the main markets tend to be the worst of the lot, and are only favored because they have thick rinds that transport well without cracking. The situation is similar to Tommy Atkins becoming most popular commercial mango grown. To eat really excellent watermelons you have to go to an area where they are locally grown and eat ones that are not selected for international trade.

whats your top few favorite varieties?

By the way, Im surprised people are debating the merits of seesless vs seeded etc from walmart or costco on a fruit forum.  Of course they are no good.  You need to grow your own for good ones.

I have the green gold tree for trade if you want to trade one for a Shahraban.

Sounds good Brad , how soon did you want to trade?

Whenever no rush here.  I already had planted a anar saveh that Simon left here a while ago.  Didn't even realize I had it until I looked at the tag.

The green gold tree is still little.  It was grafted just a couple months ago.

Seeded of course.  Just planted out a bunch of watermelon plants.  Fingers crossed for a good crop.
