Wonderful pomegranate FL
« on: July 21, 2020, 11:23:38 AM »
I've heard several times they dont do well in FL. Does anyone really know why? I have a small one in my yard that seems to be doing ok.

And that's all it's going to do is grow, I had a tree in my yard for 15 plus years and it fruited maybe a hand full of times with 1 or 2 fruits if I was lucky each time it fruited

So which pom cultivars should be productive in Florida, zone 9b?

I've heard that a variety called somethng like 'Vietnam Pink' is one that should do well for zone 9b.

Top work it anyway, wonderful poms are nice looking fruit that people would like the exterior appearance of but the fruit has the most hard pulpy seed kernels ever.

They need 150hrs of chill time below 45F to fruit I think.  That's probably why they dont fruit in south FL.

PIN sells Vietnamese Red. Was told by worker that it fruits well here in South FL.

Mine (3g) has only been in-ground for 3+ months. Already have had 2 flowers, no fruit yet.

Roback,

You mention that PIN sells poms.  I've seen PIN mentioned here a few times but who is PIN, please.

TIA

for what it's worth.

My mother in law, who is very nice but also very plant ignorant, gifted me what was labeled as a wonderful pomme. It sets and holds fruit pretty easily. But... the aril flesh never really seem to 'color up' in either the summer season fruits or the off season fruits (it seems to flower and set twice a year.. once in spring and once in fall)

i've let them hang for months and the arils are always either white, or with a tinge of pink/red. Seeds are really hard. Taste is OK... i wouldnt get out of bed for it but sometimes it's the only thing holding fruit and its fun to split and eat them.

I'm not a huge fan of pome's to begin with.. this may be because i've never ha da good one, but i've never been incentivized to top work it, or get rid of it since it takes up basically no space.

i'm in SWFL.

I don't know what variety of pom is commonly sold at Publix, I'm assuming it could be a 'Wonderful' but my dad planted a seed as an experiment about a year or two ago and it has grown to be about 3 feet tall now. I just planted it out on the side of our house and even if it doesn't produce, it's a beautiful ornamental. It looks great so far but I am afraid if it doesn't produce. I am not the biggest pom fan but I do enjoy them once in a while, so I wasn't scrambling to get one in the ground but if I'm using real estate for a tree I'd want it to be productive lol! I'm in zone 9b and the tree is still too young to fruit, hope it does eventually though!

I am in 9B east of Orlando. I have 2 Wonderfuls, a red Silk, and a Russian something or other. The oldest wonderful is a cone shaped bush about 8 feet tall, been in the ground for maybe 8 years, its much smaller brother has been there for 6 years. I think I have had one flower on the wonderful in all this time despite it looking great. The other two are also much smaller and not near as vigorous growers as the big Wonderful. They usually have a flower each a year, theres one on one of them as we speak. Since they are alive, I am very hard headed about removing them especially since they are maintenance free. I don't know what I would replace them with anyway. Tunisian Olives maybe? Full sun, no overhead cover, right in the front visible to the street.

Another variety of pomegranate. There are only two species in the genus.

This year has been very dry, which pommes like to a degree.  I have a young Padgett pomegranate, less than 3’ high, which fruited a couple of months back, but then it rained and the fruit split.  Someone near me has a slightly older bush which is covered in fruit.  I don’t know the variety they have.  Zone 9b.
