Kumquat flavor
« on: December 20, 2020, 02:17:52 PM »
How can kumquat flavor vary from one year to the next?  This year my Changshou kumquats have poor flavor.  Tart and juicy inside but the peel lacks the sweetness and the overall flavor is just meh, at best.  Overall not a pleasant flavor.  Its been in the ground tree for 6 years and has been a good producer of good tasting, quality fruit in the past. My Meiwa nearby tastes good so not sure why the Changshou is sub par this year.
Near NRG Stadium, Houston Texas. USDA zone 9a

Except for the first crop of my Meiwa, where the fruits were very bland and dry, my kumquats have all been pretty consistent from year to year.  I have multiple Changshou/Fukushu trees.  The only real difference I have seen with my Changshou crops is that they make larger fruit as the trees grow larger (the larger fruit is worse, in my opinion) and they are seedless when there are no pollinators during bloom.

I can't explain why yours might be different, but it isn't something I would consider common.
