Jaboticaba Grove in Central FL (Flying Fox Fruits)
« on: April 04, 2015, 02:03:16 PM »
I decided to take the plunge.  I started planting out my grove of jaboticabas.

so far I've got 32 planted (it took about 2 hrs...the mosquitoes chased me inside the house as soon as the sun went down, or else I would have kept working).

They're planted at 6ft apart.  This is so I will have less area to protect when a freeze comes, and they also will protect each other from the wind.  I plan on pruning the heck out of them, so it doesn't bother me if they grow together like a hedge.

I will have to check my inventory, but I think I'm going to plant out another 48 trees, to have an even 80.

I will document the progress of this grove.  I'm going to be conducting several experiments, mainly with mulching and weed blocking at first.  I'm really trying to push these to start fruiting by next year.  I want these trees to produce substantial crops within 3 yrs.

Awesome! Did you add some sort of an irrigation system? Good luck!

I would never have asked this question before learning from you, Adam, about the diversity of what I had previously called simply jaboticaba, but are these plantings all one species?  Or, have you made some different species selections for this grove?

thanks to all who have contributed to this discussion, and who've given me encouragement!

I would never have asked this question before learning from you, Adam, about the diversity of what I had previously called simply jaboticaba, but are these plantings all one species?  Or, have you made some different species selections for this grove?

they are all the Red jabo...it's essentially everbearing, dwarf, and fruits from seed in 3-5 yrs...what more can you ask for?  Pound for pound there is no other fruit tree that can compete with the red jabo.

I will most likely plant a few rows of Grimal (later this year? or next?)

and of course some Sabara.

I'm just hesitant to plant my big Grimals in the ground...I want to keep them in pots (in the greenhouse) as long as possible.

Awesome! Did you add some sort of an irrigation system? Good luck!

the location I'm at is unique...it has a hard pan about 2ft down that really slows percolation.  So it's almost like having a huge dish underneath my property.  Being that I'm on a limited budget, I have not set up irrigation yet, but it would be very easy to do...truth be told, I'm spending about 2 hours hand watering every day (but this is for the stuff in the greenhouses in pots).  The plants that are in ground require much less water....and being that I'm in a wet spot, they require even less.  I've gone for a solid 2 months (it seems) without providing any substantial irrigation for my in-ground trees.

What are your plans to keep fruit protected from birds and others? Individual nets? Big net over the whole thing? Start an outdoor cat sanctuary?

In peach orchards they use distressed bird calls over speakers that help keep them out. Of course, it sounds like angry squeaking birds from sunup to sundown.

You're a beast! They will like the nice acidic sand you have up there. I once tried to get someone from your area to truck me down some of that soil. No one would do it :-(. So, I had to make do with palm beach county sand.

Maybe you can get a couple of smudge pots or something?

What are the trees off to the left that look a bit like Mamey Sapote?

I will most likely make a frame around them, so I can erect a bird net...and also cover the trees with plastic on the coldest nights...I will heat with well water....the record low temp near me is about 18F....a mature red jabo can easily handle brief exposure to 23-24F.

I want one, Adam Other.  :)  Help me to get it, Sir!

Also, those Loq scions you sent to me have mostly all taken and are sprouting new growths.  Thanks!

The Vista White seems most aggressive thus far.

I need to plant more before I sell them all.

I'm into numerology....it's a powerful number.

http://www.ridingthebeast.com/numbers/nu64.php

we used the petioles of sabal palms to stabilize the trees from wind damage...it was much cheaper than buying bamboo poles.  We hammered them into the ground with bricks.

I will post some updates regularly (as I manage the grove)...

next is mulching, and fertilizing, and pruning.... (maybe we will make a video?)

eventually I will have fruits (or some product thereof) for sale!

thanks everyone!

when production finally gets going...I think we will produce juice (pulp).

It will be frozen, then shipped all around the USA, and of course sold locally.

one thing is for sure...it won't be cheap!

seriously! I'm skilled in the art of  OCDsmanship!

I just love the number 8! crazy 8's! it's infinite! and LUCKY!

If you truly love a plant, you will grow at least 8 of them!
otherwise you are going to be at a disadvantage...numerically speaking that is.  :P

8 everything 8!

today I ate an 8 layered burrito, with 8 glasses of V8!

Good luck with the grove.  What an endeavor!

Pulp/Juice is interesting concept. Is there a market for it?   My tree has about thousand ripe fruit on it now. I'm like...what do I do with it all???

Nice job adam, can't wait to see the progress and additional things such as mulching, training, and fertilization.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Dave!

JUICE IT!

the juice is so sweet and flavorful, you can dilute it with water (1:1)...and it still tastes amazing!

the juice would be ready for a winemaker, chef, or bartender to use....

the color of the pulp/juice is a beautiful pink/purple....

the flavor is even better than the color!

there is a market for the stuff, but it's very labor intensive to pick and process...the price will be absurdly high....but people will pay, because it won't be available anywhere else!

Good job, Adam. I'm putting good vibes out to you. I feel 8 can go either way being that it's infinite, but I use my own numerology so what'd I know lol. I'm influencing it for good though. :)

Can't wait to visit your grove one day. :)
