Grimal Jaboticaba ( or whatever its called ) in Texas
« on: April 03, 2015, 07:20:21 PM »
Wow after battling the winter here in Central Texas for several months I have flowers on my Grimal Jaboticaba! Very excited! I am looking forward to harvesting that first fruit from my own tree! It will make the winter battle worth the trouble!

Nice, Ed.  How old are your trees?

Not sure Harry I got this tree from Adam 2 1/2 years ago from Adam before I moved back to Texas. I think it was at least 3 years old when I got it from Adam but he would have to confirm. So at least 5 1/2 years or older.

Nice! Do you have a greenhouse you keep it in? What minimum temperature do you try to keep inside if so for this guy?

Ed congrats!

I can't remember exactly how old it was, but my guess is that it looked much younger than it was.  I got those plants from my friend, and he always lets them get root bound...so it was probably more like 4-5yrs when you got it.

If he had given the tree proper care, it would have been twice the size.

but the good thing about growing them like my friend does, is that you can spend less money on soil/fertilizer/labor, and pots...the trees really take off once they get sold to someone like you or me!  They respond very well to some attention....Grimal definitely fruits years before Sabara.

(the other name is Peluda de Alagoas, but don't try to sell it under that name in USA...you will have a hard time getting people to remember and associate with it.)

Ok thanks Adam! So I guess it is closer to 8 years old.

Yes I'm growing it in a greenhouse. But it did get down to 26 F one night in my greenhouse due loss of heat. Yes it is a seedling. One of my all time favorite plants!

Ed,

just so u know, I was worried they wouldn't set fruits in the greenhouse without a pollinator, but apparently they set a good amount of fruits with no bees (maybe the wind, or some smaller bug pollinates them?)

but I've also seen plants that just have trouble setting fruits...not sure why this is...could be cultural, or the plant itself, having trouble with pollen receptivity.

my advice is to keep them wet, but always draining (they can definitely handle a flood).  It seems like they enjoy the constant wet/dry cycle, but never totally dry.
