PlantOGram Woo hoo!
« on: February 14, 2012, 11:14:11 AM »
OK Fruit Cowboys - For those of you who rely on mail order to get high quality fruit trees, PlantOGram is your source. I just purchased a tree yesterday -- and the darn thing came at 9:30am this morning. (That's less than 24 hours for the math-challenged!) The tree is over 5 feet tall and super healthy in a 3gal! I even got my free surinam cherry :-).

For local sourcing (here in Broward), I'll hook you guys up. But for mail order, Mickey is the man!

:-) Well - the other other 100 or so trees he carries are much, much cheaper (I didn't buy a Maha Chanok :-). The Maha Chanok is not available anywhere wholesale, so he's paying full retail price for them. If it was me, I'd either do without the MC or, if I absolutely had to have it, sheepishly ask for a discount :-)

Congrats Jeff, I have been thinking of getting a mango tree from plantogram. However, I must hold off due to my budget. Its much more affordable to get scion wood and graft onto manila seedlings.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

I for one have been very happy with Mickey.  The plants I have purchased from him have all been first rate, and the overall cost has been the same as other nurseries in Florida that have shipped to me.   I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

How sure is he that it is a male spanish lime? Air layered or grafted?

It's grafted.

That brings about another question. Where did he get the tree? I thought he used to just buy trees from other sources and then sell them. That would mean he probably bought that spanish lime grafted somewhere and then resold it. If he is doing the grafting himself that is impressive. Unless he tells you the source, I would be concerned about the sex of that spanish lime.

Do you have a pic of the tree? I might be interested in getting a pair if they are pretty decent sized. Hopefully he is certain of the sex.

Jsvand,
I like the fruit but honestly I wouldn't even plant the tree if I had limited space. It's a pretty tree but it gets huge. You could use your space for more tastier fruit.

Yah, I highly doubt he grafted it :-). Pine Island did have grafted male trees for a time. They had been selling them at one of the fruit council meetings up north. My guess is that they originated at Pine Island. Where PI got them is anybody's guess. Pretty mysterious little tree... But now I can finally have a mate for my female :-).

Jeff, can a male and female be grafted on one rootstock and sell that as one tree?  Self pollinating.  :o

Makes sense. Do you know if PI still has grafted male trees? I may need to buy some.

A problem about the male and female that I was told is that sometimes the different males don't bloom the same times as some of the grafted females.

Are you going to approach graft a branch of your male onto your female tree?

I think PI is sold out. To be honest, if you're hunting for a male spanish lime tree, plantogram is the place. My tree was over 5 feet tall and very, very nice looking. It's basically a 7 gallon sized tree.

I was going to try shield budding the male onto my female. We'll see ...

Yah - you can graft the male to the female plant (technically speaking). Grafting the spanish lime is not easy though. If you get 10-15% take, you're doing very well.

The other option is to offer the neighbor a free, attractive shade tree (a male spanish lime :-).

The sermon at my church this week was about respecting your neighbor's boundaries... Funny thing is I slid down in my seat because I have stuff that really pushes the boundaries... I guess Jeff's idea is a nicer way to utilize your neighbors property!

HAHAHAHA Usually the neighbors are happy to have free trees in exchange for sharing fruit and budwood, especially if your neighbors are mostly of north american descent and prefer processed food, burgers, and french fries over fresh fruit :-).

Before Hurricane Ike took it down,  I had a huge Half male/half female spanish lime on my property that I am told was planted almost 50 years ago. The female half bore huge amounts of fruit so they must have been blooming at the same time.   Miss that tree...

Mickey is a good guy!

I've known him for about 3yrs it seems now, and he has a good reputation, and a kind heart...and a good idea for a business.

He's never eaten a piece of meat in his life!!!

So I guess he would know what fruits to eat and grow? LOL

I highly recommend Plant-o-gram.

Sincerely,

Adam Shafran

Since he is South African, do you think he would have access to good marula varieties?

I got my Maha C from Mickey and it was a top quality tree, exactly as everybody has been saying.
And Mickey is a super nice guy, too.  Also received a free surinam cherry tree.....

The dude's got generosity and pride in his blood....

I'll second the good opinions re: Plantogram and Mickey. He sells quality merchandise. I hope his business flourishes...he is a great guy.
