Best annona for pot culture
« on: March 28, 2022, 06:13:19 PM »
Hello! I am considering different annonas to grow once I have enough space. I already have soursop, rollinia and cherimoya seedlings. What are some annona species that do in a pot, and taste good? I am in zone 5b so nothing can go in the ground.  :(

We fruited Sugar Apple in 25 gallon pots here in Florida. It makes the smallest tree of the common anona species and would probably be your best option.

Sugar apple is the easiest annona to fruit up north. Just don’t overwater during winter and you’ll be fine. Or maybe try grafting onto annona Montana or annona glabra… mine keep getting root rot because of the soil during winter. Poshte, soursop, and Rollinia have all done well up here, just don’t think fruiting is worth it in a pot.

Sugar Apple does well in containers. I have a green and a red sugar apple each in 5 gal containers. They are about 5yrs old and give me about 5 fruits each a year.
They also reliably fruit each year. Hand pollination helps setting fruit. The time to ripe duration from flower to fruit is also shorter than Atemoya for me. Sometimes my Gefner Atemoya did not ripen till early December.

All my tropicals spend 5 months of the year in a unheated but attached garage.

Atemoya would be another one to try. They are larger and more vigorous so would require a larger container.

What are some sugar apple varieties you recommend? I have seen there are a lot.
