Citrus General Discussion / Re: Moro not flowering??
« on: December 12, 2017, 12:21:18 PM »
That is only true for oranges?? My feminello is flowering on older wood. Or at least it seams to me.
I have not pruned since july. How old does the new wood needs to be before flowering?

Thank you Citrange. The first three years I had it in a more dormant stage, light not as bright as this year, no fertilizer and temps around 60. This is the first year I have it actively growing during winter. All other trees are actively growing and flowering.
But maybe too much nitrogen? Wrong pruning?

I have a Moro blood orange tree that I got about four or five years ago from FW in california. It was a three to four year old when it came  here. It is container grown and all it does is growing leafs. Not one single flower. What am I doing wrong? This is the only tree in my collection not flowering (besides some that are too young)
I keep it under artificial light for 12 to 14 ours. Night temps cooler than day temps.
This is not a small tree. Thick and lush canopy.

I keep my fingers (and toes) crossed. It is always sad to loose an accumulation of experience and knowledge.

I noticed on some of my flowers (meyer. lemonquat ) that they are missing the stigma. Is there a reason for it? missing nutrition? normal because time of the year?

Thank you. The thing is that the plants are actually growing really well with the cfl lambs.
But if I understand you, it cost more energy??

Citrus General Discussion / Lights????
« on: November 15, 2017, 01:45:16 PM »
I use CFL 6500K bulbs for the citrus room. A lot of people seem to promote those fancy and very expensive red and blue lights (Tactronic)
How important is it really for the plant to have the red and blue? Does it really matter to justify the huge price difference?
My trees are in since 10/15. Lots of growth and budding. But will this be enough for 5 to 6 month? Lights on about 12 to14 hours, temps between 15C and 24C, humidity 60% to 70% and a fan going several hours a day.
Here they are as of this morning

I just seem to have no luck to buy a good meiwa tree. All trees bought online without possibility to see them up close. I would never have bought them from a store because they were in such bad shape. Makes me kinda sad. I have some from seeds but they will take a long time before they are looking like a tree or have fruits. I got a little Flying dragon and some trifoliate bitter orange and might try grafting a meiwa seedling or a cutting onto it.

Thank you Millet. Is it possible to grow Meiwa on its own roots? Or not so good? I have one Meiwa on carizzo, came in poor condition this summer and still no sign of growth but looks like it want to go. But heard this was not a good root stock and people recommended to get on on C35 which I did. This tree was the worst I have ever spent money on. Lots of leafs lost during transit although only three days en route. Discovered severe root rot when re-potting. Tree now lost more then 70% of its leafs and really looks pittyful. I so would like to grow a Meiwa but not sure how to get a decent tree. No problems with any other variety.
When I bought the last one (beautiful btw. nice and dark green no leaf dropping just wrong root stock) I did not know what it will be grafted on.

I just got a Meiwa that is grafted on volckamer. Somewhere I read a comment from somebody that the quality of the fruits is poor and therefore not a good choice for Meiwa but only for lemons.
So I did my own search and found that citrus on volkameriana are rapidly growing, excellent crop and resistance to some diseases. On the negative side it was mentioned that fruit has thicker rind, less acidity, and frost sensitive.

Meiwa is supposed to have thicker rind and less acidity not really bad if the fruit is supposed to be sweet? And temps are not that of an important factor as the tree grows in container anyway.
Am I missing something? Tree is still small and I think could be air rooted off the rootstock? Or use a cutting and graft onto a different rootstock? Would that change quality of the fruit?

Thank you for the explanation Millet. Yes makes sense. But how does this translate to container grown trees?

Thank you for the explanation Lorenzo. My feminello is indeed fruiting and flowering at the same time. :)

Ican not help with pruning either. I just cut off what I think could go, dead twigs and those that are crossed

Thank you Lory. I would loove to add the Feminello zagara bianca. After you mentioned this variety the first time I was looking for it but seems not to be available here in the US? I have the Santa teresa and this one is not easy to get either.

Citrus General Discussion / Purple new growth???
« on: November 01, 2017, 11:36:14 AM »
My trees are all inside since almost three weeks now. Lots of extra light, because of plant density also humid. I would say almost tropical. I see a lot of new growth and flower buds forming. Lemon flush is not purple like I would see in summer. Is it because of the artificial light? Or nutritional?
Here is my Buddhas Hand as an example

My Meyer, flowers are all white and only some of them a very slight hint of purple

Do I need different light to get purple? Or does it matter at all?

Snek your trees are looking great. Do you have them in a green house year round or moving in and out through the seasons? What kind of material are your container? I would love to get my trees to fruit like that.

Using mice as a test object is not really great. I doubt the results have any value as they just don't live as long anyways and their metabolism is so very different.
